WinkBed vs Helix Midnight Luxe: Materials & Design
- Both mattresses are hybrids
- Both mattresses are 13.5” high
- Both mattresses have enhanced lumbar support
Although the mattresses have similarities in their heights and enhanced lumbar support, the design underneath the covers is quite different. The biggest of these is that the WinkBed is customizable, with four firmness options (soft, luxury firm, firm, plus), while the Helix Midnight Luxe only comes in one firmness. However, do note that Helix’s USP is that they make a mattress to suit every sleeping style and body type so, if the Midnight Luxe isn’t for you, there will be another Helix that’s better suited.
The WinkBed starts with a breathable Tencel cover, followed by a Euro-pillow top in the soft, luxury firm and firm options. The soft version has a three-layered pillow top, whereas the luxury firm and firm have a two-layered version.
Underneath this is gel-infused foam, with the soft version having more of this pressure-relieving foam to provide more cushioning. The Plus version is constructed slightly differently at the top, skipping the pillow top and going straight for a layer of anti-sag foam, followed by a latex support layer with seven support zones.
All the mattresses are finished with a layer of individually wrapped coils with reinforced edge support and have WinkBeds’ 3-step Back Relief System and LumbarLayer for more support in the middle third of the mattress.
The Helix Midnight Luxe starts with a breathable Tencel cover, but sleepers do have the option to upgrade to a GlacioTex cover for extra cooling. You’ll see this fabric in many of our best cooling mattresses, with it being well regarded for its ability to help keep sleepers cool.
This is followed by a premium quilted pillow top sewn into the mattress, and like the best pillow top mattresses, this gives side sleepers more cushioning. Next up is a layer of copper gel foam, followed by a transition layer of memory foam. This sits on top of the individually wrapped coils, which are reinforced around the perimeter and the center third for edge support and enhanced lumbar support.
The mattress is finished off with a DuraDense foam base layer for support. There’s also the option to upgrade to an ErgoAlign Layer, which we would recommend to people with back pain. This upgrades the top layer of the mattress with ultra-dense zoned foam that adds more body contouring and support where needed around the lumbar region. Like the best memory foam mattresses, this means the Midnight Luxe excels in motion isolation.
WinkBed vs Helix Midnight Luxe: Comfort & Support
- The WinkBed comes in four firmness options – soft (4.5/10), luxury firm (6.5/10), firm (7.5/10) and plus (8/10)
- The Helix Midnight Luxe is a medium firm mattress that we rated at 6/10
- The Helix Midnight Luxe is specifically designed for side sleepers, while the WinkBed has different options for different sleeping styles
We tested the luxury firm version of the WinkBed in our WinkBed mattress review, finding that it was a great all-rounder that suited a wide variety of sleepers. Pressure points are well supported and cushioned, while the 3-step Back Relief System and LumbarLayer both do an excellent job of aligning the spine along with easing muscle tension and pains.
The other bonuses of the WinkBed is the dedicated Plus version for heavier sleepers – we rate this the best mattress for heavy people. We’d suggest that the soft version is best suited to side sleepers and the firm to those who sleep on their stomachs or are back sleepers with lower back pain.
In our Helix Midnight Luxe mattress review, we rated the bed as the best mattress for side sleepers that you can currently buy. There’s outstanding pressure relief and cushioning from the plush pillow top, which will help prevent any pressure build up at the shoulders and hips.
However, underneath this, the mattress offers firmer support, and the copper-infused memory foam and reinforced coils do a great job of keeping the spine aligned and the lumbar region supported. In fact, because of this, many back sleepers may also enjoy the feel of the Helix Midnight Luxe and could also see a reduction in back pain.
WinkBed vs Helix Midnight Luxe: Temperature Regulation
- Both mattresses offer decent temperature regulation
- The WinkBed has a moisture wicking cover and well-spaced coils for airflow
- The Helix Midnight Luxe has a breathable Tencel cover, copper-infused memory foam and a coil layer to promote airflow
During our testing, WinkBed did a good job of keeping our testers cool and comfortable. There’s a breathable Tencel cover to absorb moisture, gel-infused foam and individually wrapped coils that help move air through the mattress. It also did a good job of keeping sleepers cool throughout the night.
We tested the Helix Midnight Luxe with its standard Tencel cover and found it did a good job of keeping sleepers cool. The breathable cover is backed up by a coil layer to promote airflow and copper-infused memory foam to draw heat away from the body. There’s also the option to upgrade to a GlacioTex cooling cover if you’re a really hot sleeper.
Staying cool at night is important for people with back pain as overheating can make sleepers restless. Constant tossing and turning as you throw covers off to try and cool down will only exacerbate back pain.
WinkBed vs Helix Midnight Luxe: Which should you buy?
Buy the WinkBed if…
✅ You’re of a heavier build: The WinkBed Plus is our top pick for heavier bodies, with its anti-sag foam, latex layer and banded together coils that offer extra durability.
✅ You want customization options: With four firmness options to choose from, you can pick the WinkBed that will best suit your body type and sleeping style.
✅ You experience back pain: The WinkBed offers fantastic pressure relief and its 3-step Back Relief System helps to support the spine and prevent any back pain from building up.
Buy the Helix Midnight Luxe if…
✅ You’re a side sleeper who enjoys a firmer feel: Although the Helix Midnight Luxe is specifically designed for side sleepers, it’s a medium firm mattress. This means it will be firmer than a lot of mattresses designed for side sleepers. However, this is ideal for back pain sufferers as it will help to keep the spine aligned.
✅ You’re a side sleeper or lighter weight back sleeper with back pain: The enhanced lumbar support will keep these sleepers pain free, but there’s still plenty of cushioning at the top to prevent any pressure points building up.
✅ You sleep hot: Although both mattresses do a decent job of temperature regulation, the Helix gives you the option to upgrade to a GlacioTex cooling cover that should keep even the hottest sleepers cool at night.

When testing the DreamCloud Luxury Hybrid for Tom's Guide, Jo said: "I loved the back support and pressure relief it offered. Plus, it looks far more expensive than it is."
