Tom's Guide Verdict

The Valmori Hybrid Mattress II is an affordable option from a new brand in the bed-in-a-box space. We enjoyed the gel air memory foam paired with the pocket springs that give the mattress the right amount of bounce without sinking or sagging. It's also what would make this great for side sleepers, who would benefit as the mattress is even-keeled, meaning it doesn't dip in the middle if you change positions or lie on your side. We can't quite give it full marks though, as it only has one handle, but it did come with free pillows, which were rather plump. All Valmori mattresses come with a 15-year warranty, 100-night risk-free trial and you can return it for a refund if you're not satisfied.

Valmori Home Collection (we'll refer to it as just 'Valmori' here on in) is the local offshoot of an Italian brand that's headquartered in Western Sydney. It recently skyrocketed into the mattress-in-box space in Australia, offering three mattresses to suit different types of sleepers.

Unlike other mattress brands, Valmori also stocks gel-infused memory foam toppers, just in case you find your new mattress a touch too firm. And with every Valmori mattress purchase, you'll score up to four free pillows, depending on your chosen bed size. All mattresses come with a 15-year warranty and they're CertiPUR-US certified, meaning they're free of chemicals like formaldehyde, all while promising to be antibacterial.

Valmori also offers a 100-night trial, so you can experience any of the mattresses risk-free. If you don't love it, you are eligible for a refund after 28 days (more on this below). Plus, Valmori offers fast and free delivery to almost everywhere nationwide, with most metro areas receiving their orders within three business days.

Valmori provided a king-size Hybrid Mattress II for this review, which combines memory foam and steel pocket springs with a natural latex layer for support – read on to find out what we thought about it.

Valmori Hybrid Mattress II: Review in brief

  • Cool during hot summer nights
  • Removable and washable cover
  • 15-year warranty

Everyone has their own sleeping preference, so finding something that suits one person may differ from another. The Valmori Hybrid II was specifically designed side sleepers, but we found it was reasonably comfortable for all sleeping positions. The mattress is rated as medium firmness by the brand — but does not provide an accurate scale rating — and we found this to be fair for the most part. The Hybrid II's removable cover is plush and pillow-lined which gives it a more medium-soft feel in real-world use.

The mattress comes in five sizes — Single, King Single, Double, Queen and King — with prices starting at AU$900 for the single. All sizes are 26.5cm thick and come with an astounding 15-year warranty, which provides the ultimate peace of mind that the mattress is a worthwhile long-term investment for good sleep.

A notable feature of the Hybrid II is the built-in temperature regulation from the dual gel-memory foam layer that provides terrific airflow and ventilation. So for warm sleepers, you can stay relatively cool even on the hottest Aussie summer nights. The mattress was tested in during Sydney's spring months, which had its fair share of warm, muggy nights and it did well at keeping the two reviewers from overheating.

The top gel memory foam layer also helps in motion isolation, so if you frequently toss and turn, your partner can sleep relatively undisturbed, something we can attest to as one of the reviewers is a light sleeper with a restless partner.

Valmori mattress specs

Height: 26.5cm
Trial period: 100-nights
Warranty: 15-years

The rest of the mattress has a layer of natural latex, a layer of eco-friendly foam and a pocket spring layer that has seven zones of support for spine alignment and comfort. The Hybrid II comes with an anti-slip bottom and a removable cover that can be thrown in the wash if it needs a clean.

We had no issues using regular sheets with the mattress, as it measured in at 26.5cm thick and it didn't make our bed feel too high. The mattress was surprisingly much lighter than the average king mattress, weighing in at 44kg. The other sizes are also much lighter too, ranging from single at 22.5kg, king single at 26.5kg, double at 32kg and queen at 37kg. We did find it was a two person job to manoeuvre the mattress, as expected with most king-size mattresses, but it could have benefited from an extra handle on both sides of the bed.

We did enjoy receiving two free pillow sets, which were extremely cosy and were easy to plump back up again after use. As we reviewed a king mattress, we received four pillows, which is also how many you'll get with a double or a queen. However, if you order a single or a king single, you'll receive two free pillows (aka one 'pillow set' as Valmori calls it).

Read on to find out more about our thoughts, but overall, we found the Valmori Hybrid II to be a great option for those who want support on a budget, especially for side sleepers keen on a long-term investment in their sleep health.

Valmori Hybrid Mattress II review: price and deals

  • Relatively affordable option
  • Mattress quiz to help selection
  • Sizable discounts during sales

The Hybrid II is a relatively affordable option from Valmori, ranking as a mid-range alternative to other hybrid mattresses. It isn't as expensive as others from brands like Emma Sleep and, as with all other mattress brands, there'll be regular discounts during major sales where you can save some cash. Year-round, though, Valmori offers 10% off your purchase if you sign up for marketing emails.

The website also has a 'mattress quiz' designed to help you choose the right mattress for your needs. You'll answer questions about your sleeping positions, firmness preferences and size options. We took this quiz before our review, and our results suggested choosing either the Hybrid II or Valmori's traditional pocket spring option, the Spring Mattress. While we did find this quiz to be somewhat helpful in making decisions, ultimately, mattress selection does come down to personal preferences and what may seem like the best option for you online, may not be the case when the box arrives, which makes the 100-night trial so important.

However, if you are located in or around Sydney and you're worried about making the wrong decision, you can always pop into Valmori's warehouse and test the mattresses for yourself, before ordering online.

Valmori Hybrid Mattress II review: Delivery, returns and warranty

  • Fast delivery
  • 100-night trial
  • Free returns and refunds

Valmori offers fast delivery to almost everywhere nationwide, with East Coast metro cities receiving their orders within three business days. The only exception to this is Brisbane, which has an estimated delivery time of four business days. If you live in a regional or rural area anywhere else in Australia, you can expect to receive your order within seven business days. There may be a charge for delivery to certain very remote areas.

Valmori promises to deliver to your doorstep, and in our case, the delivery driver was able to drop it off inside our apartment. However, this may not always be possible, so if you do live in an apartment, the box may be delivered to your foyer area. If you live in Sydney, you can collect your mattress at the Valmori warehouse on the same day if you place your order before 1pm, and pick it up before 4pm Monday to Friday.

Valmori also offers a 100-night trial, so you can try out the mattress risk-free. If you don't love it, you can request a return, and the company will collect the mattress free of charge.

To be eligible for a refund, you need to have slept on the mattress for at least 28 nights, as the brand suggests it can take up to 5 weeks for your body to adjust to the mattress. That said, as per Valmori's refund policy, it will take 5 to 10 business days to arrange the collection after you request a refund and it could take another 14 days to process it after the company has received the mattress. All in all, the Valmori return process could take a month in itself, so if you do decide to end your trial, we'd suggest starting the process as soon as those 28 days are up.

You'll also get a 15-year warranty for the mattress, which is almost unheard of for mattress-in-a-box brands. Comparatively, Emma and Koala mattresses come with 10-year guarantees that cover sagging of over 2.5cm, which is pretty standard. Valmori's warranty covers springs, foams, fabrics, seams and stitches, but doesn't specify directly what that entails. However, depending on the mattress type, the warranty does provide some peace of mind that your Valmori mattress is going to be comfortable for a substantially long time.

Valmori Hybrid Mattress II review: Design and materials

Image depicting the seven layers of the Valmori Hybrid Mattress II as shown on the Valmori website

  • Gel air memory foam layer
  • Removable and washable cover
  • 26.5cm thickness

The Hybrid Mattress II has six layers, each made with different materials to enhance overall comfort. The top layer underneath the removable cover is what the brand calls the Gel Air memory foam created to provide pressure relief and isolate movement, regardless of how you change position throughout the night. This layer also helps with increasing airflow and regulating body heat. While it does exactly what it's designed to do, some movement does get transferred, but it's minimal and you likely won't be disturbed unless you're an extremely light sleeper.

Underneath the foam lies a thinner layer of natural latex made from toxin-free materials. The base of the bed is a pocket spring layer with seven zones tailored to provide spinal support and further minimise movements. We found that this layer gave the mattress the right amount of bounce so we didn't feel like we were ever truly sinking into the bed.

The brand does specify that the pocket springs aid with edge support too, and for the most part, they does the job thanks to a special firmer layer at the side and ends of the mattress. Overall, the Hybrid II is firm enough to keep you stable if you're sitting on the edge, and you can sleep all the way to the side without feeling like the mattress sags down.

The layers are neatly wrapped in the removable cover, made out of 35% cotton and 65% polyester. It has a zipper that makes it easy to remove for washing and has a nice amount of stretch to pop it back on without a hassle. The polyester adds to the breathability of the cover, and it tends to dissipate heat quickly. The cover is also hypoallergenic and is manufactured to inhibit the growth of dust mites, bacteria and fungi.

Valmori Hybrid Mattress II review: Firmness and comfort

  • Medium-soft firmness
  • Tom's Guide firmness rating 6 out of 10
  • Comfortable, cloud-like feeling

The Hybrid Mattress II is rated as medium firmness by the manufacturer, and while we agree with this rating, it’s definitely on the softer side, thanks to the plush cover. For this reason alone, we would rate this as medium-soft and give it a rating of 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale.

The mattress is overwhelmingly soft to the touch but, unlike memory foam beds, it isn't too spongey. This is thanks to the pocket springs, which provide a level of firmness and the right amount of bounce to keep from feeling like you're sinking into it at any given second. It was very comfortable and cloud-like, to say the least — if it were any softer, we wouldn't have enjoyed sleeping on it as much.

The foam layers provided enough support to ease pressure points, and we found it super easy to adjust to the mattress compared to a typical pocket spring setup. For side sleepers especially, we found the mattress didn't create any pressure points on our hips or shoulders. The mattress was relatively even-keeled, meaning we didn't find that we sunk into the middle of the mattress when lying on one side.

We can fully acknowledge that firmness choices are personal, but we're quite confident that the Hybrid II is ideal for all sleepers, but particularly side sleepers who need more support from their mattress.

Valmori Hybrid Mattress II review: Performance

  • Minimal motion transfer
  • Great temperature regulation
  • CertiPUR-US certified

There are aspects of mattress comfort that are very subjective, whereas other performance metrics are more easily quantified. We've uncovered all the important factors below to help provide you with a better understanding of the features offered by the Valmori Hybrid Mattress II and how they might help improve your sleep experience.

Do keep this in mind when trialling a new mattress: it takes time for your body to adjust to a new setup or for a mattress to be 'broken in', so do try and sleep on it for about a month before making any decisions. It's also what many bed brands suggest doing to fulfil their return policy.

Setup

(Image credit: Tom's Guide / Lucy Scotting)

Score: 5 / 5

The Hybrid II comes in a single large box, and in our case, it was rather sizable as we had ordered the king. The mattress weighs in at 44kg in this size, which is much lighter than the average weight of most king mattresses at 59-82kg. It was easy to move around before unpacking but did require two people post-unboxing to move it due to the length.

The Valmori mattress box was a well-constructed, tough cardboard container that came with handles for easy lifting and was delivered directly into the apartment. While it was delivered inside the home, you do need to take over from there and having two people on deck during setup is helpful.

Getting the mattress out of the box and unwrapping it was rather straightforward, and to our delight, it came with a plastic cutter. The plastic bag over the mattress was thick, and there was an additional wrap to keep it tightly packed into the box. It's also worth noting here that the free pillows are sealed into the back of the mattress, so if you're keen to get those out first, we'd suggest opening the mattress wrong-side up.

As we reviewed the king-size mattress, we received four pillows — otherwise marketed as two 'pillow sets' by the brand. A pillow set consists of one standard pillow and one cylindrical bolster pillow, both of which can be easily plumped up to retain their shape. These pillows have now replaced our old ones, and the bolster pillows are an added bonus to help dissipate one reviewer's hip and lower back pain when sleeping on their side.

The Hybrid II has a single handle on the side, disguised underneath its logo. It was very helpful to have the handle to manoeuvre the mattress onto our frame, as it would have been much more fiddly without one, but having two side handles would have been better.

The mattress measures 26.5cm thick, which is perfect for standard fitted sheets and mattress protectors. We found the weight (44kg) to be lighter than most king mattresses.

Off-gassing

Score: 5 / 5

As a hybrid mattress with foam and pocket springs, you'll likely notice a distinct odour when you open up the plastic wrapping. That said, the smell is minimal and usually dissipates within an hour or so if the room is well-ventilated.

This process is called off-gassing, and it allows volatile gases trapped within the mattress during the manufacturing process to escape as soon as the plastic is removed. It can take a few hours for the process to finish, and it's recommended that you allow at least 4-5 hours for off-gassing to occur before you put sheets on and start using the mattress.

In our testing, we found that the smell lingered for the first hour, but sleeping on the mattress that night was not an issue. After a day, the mattress had little to no smell when breathing up close with no sheet. The smell was totally nonexistent after a week. The mattress itself is CertiPUR-US certified, meaning it's free of chemicals like formaldehyde and the cover has an antibacterial coating.

Pressure relief

Score: 5 / 5

Two reviewers of different height, weight and sleeping positions slept on the mattress during testing. The Hybrid II was designed to support all sleepers, but pays extra attention to side and stomach sleepers in terms of pressure relief. One reviewer was pleasantly surprised by how supportive it was as a side sleeper, especially for their shoulders and hip, and they didn't feel as if they were sinking into the mattress if they stayed in one position too long.

Spinal alignment too is relatively good due to the foam layers providing support throughout the entire mattress. One reviewer found that the Hybrid II provided supportive comfort for their hips and lower back, and even after running a marathon they avoided waking up overly sore. That said, this writer prefers a mattress that’s slightly firmer in general and found that if it were a touch softer, they would not have enjoyed it as much — meaning, the Hybrid II was just right.

Overall, the comfort is great and commendable, but we'd suggest this mattress would be better suited for side sleepers who need constant support or those who prefer a medium-soft mattress.

Temperature regulation

Score: 4 / 5

Even with the best air conditioning or oscillating fan, a hot summer night can be worsened if you have a warm mattress. But even in cooler weather, the same lack of airflow and moisture wicking can build up humidity and lead to disrupted sleep.

The Hybrid II has an air memory foam layer that is supposed to help keep you cool all night. It was tested during Sydney's spring months, which had its fair share of warm and cool nights. The mattress did a reasonable job of keeping the sleepers cool during those warmer evenings — and the mattress even felt cool to the touch.

We did find, however, the mattress' temperature regulation was so good that it prompted one of the reviewers to use an additional blanket on a particularly cooler night. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it might be something to keep in mind if you or your partner tend to feel cold easily.

Overall, we found the mattress to provide excellent ventilation, akin to the other breathable hybrid mattresses, such as the Ecosa Pure.

Edge support

Score: 4 / 5

The Hybrid II mattress has the same firmness across the entire mattress, and provides decent edge support. The mattress does allow you to sit on the end or sides without feeling like it's sagging too much. The top layers do sink down if you were to sit on the edges, but we didn't feel like we were slipping off. We also had no issues sleeping right at the edge during testing.

Motion transfer

Score: 5 / 5

The foam layers paired with the pocket springs of the Hybrid II mattress do a great job of minimising motion transfer, especially when compared to an older-style box spring mattress.

We found that one reviewer — who sleeps next to a frequent turner — didn't notice any movements of the other sleeper. This includes regular change of position, and constant tossing too. While this may not be the case for every sleeper, we did find that the easily disturbed sleeper didn't bat an eye when the other moved, so that was a big win in our books.

Durability

Score: 5 / 5

In our testing period, the Hybrid II didn't show any signs of wear and tear or sagging, which is expected considering the mattress comes with a mighty impressive 15-year warranty. We have little to no doubt at all that this mattress will hold up over time.

The quality of the mattress fabric was great too, with robust thread used in the stitching and an intricately designed, plush removable cover keeping up appearances. It does come with a disguised handle behind the brand's logo, which was nice, but it doesn't quite have the tough grip we were looking for when moving the mattress.

We flipped, rotated and stood the mattress up to test how the foam and layers flexed and moved. We did find everything to be stable, solid and well attached. We also didn't find any areas of concern in terms of weak spots in the springs, or indentations, so we don't anticipate the need for a warranty claim.

Valmori Hybrid Mattress II: user reviews

As we typically mention in our mattress reviews, the best option for you is totally unique to your sleep experience. We usually add in reviews from other users, especially those from Product Review, to give a bit more comparison to our time with the mattress. However, considering Valmori Home Collection is still a such a new brand (at the time of first publication), there aren't too many user reviews to be found online.

At the time of writing, Valmori's Hybrid II has 6 reviews on Product Review and an overall 5-star rating. While this is not a huge number, especially compared to the likes of Emma Sleep and Koala, which have thousands of reviews each, it's enough to gather some firsthand experiences with the mattress.

One review detailed the mattress completely transformed the user's sleep experience, especially in terms of their spinal alignment with pre-existing back injuries. All reviews suggest that the mattress doesn't suffer from sagging, and customers were happy with the ease of setup, fast delivery and ordering process from Valmori.

While there are not many ratings right now, these positive reviews do offer the brand a good start for its products, particularly the Hybrid II mattress. The brand itself has 3 reviews on Product Review, and again, all ratings are 5 stars.

Should I buy the Valmori Hybrid II mattress?

While we think the Hybrid II is comfortable for all kinds of sleepers, if you're a side sleeper, stomach sleeper or both, we think it’s an excellent option worth considering. We would argue, however, that the price is rather mid-range for a hybrid mattress, so if you're budget-conscious, it's worth nabbing during a sale.

The 15-year warranty makes up for any price disappointments though, as we find that's a commendable amount of time for any bed-in-a-box mattress to be covered for, even beating out the likes of Emma Sleep and Koala. The Hybrid II does have some minor niggles, though, like only having one handle and a shorter trial period of 100-nights. That said, it does offer fast and free delivery within a week for most metro cities, and you can get the mattress carried inside your home or apartment, making it even more accessible.

Overall, we found the Hybrid II to be an affordable option that doesn't compromise on comfort in any way.
