Purple and Puffy are brands known for their ultra comfortable beds designed to provide superior comfort and support. Like several of the beds that feature in our guide to the year's best mattress for all sleepers and budgets, both the Purple and Puffy Lux Hybrid are mattresses in a box.

The Purple Original is crafted out of a blend of cushioning foams and a signature GelFlex Grid layer, while the Puffy Lux is a hybrid, which means it's constructed out of a combination of memory foam and supportive coils. But which is right for your sleep?

In this Purple vs Puffy Lux Hybrid Mattress comparison, we'll explore the key differences between the two beds to help you choose between them, tackling price, comfort, design and more. Let's get started.

Purple Original vs Puffy Lux Hybrid Mattress: Price & deals

  •  The Purple Original costs $1,499 for a queen at full MSRP
  •  Regular sales means a queen Puffy Lux Hybrid Mattress costs $1,399
  •  The best time to buy a Purple mattress is during sale events

The Purple Original is a mid-range mattress and the least expensive within the brand's range. At full MSRP, a twin size is priced at $999 while a queen sits at $1,499. Thanks to fairly regular Purple mattress sales and discounts during major events, you can occasionally pick up a queen for $1,299. For instance, the current post-Black Friday discount takes $200 off all sizes of the Purple mattresses, dropping the price of a queen Purple Original to $1,299.

While you can get a Purple Original from many retailers like Bed Bath &Beyond, Macy’s and Mattress Firm, we recommend you buy it directly from the brand to take full advantage of the 100-night sleep trial, free shipping and 10-year warranty they offer.

The Puffy Lux, on the other hand, is a premium mattress and is the second most expensive bed offered by the brand. A twin mattress retails at $2,149 (more than a California King sized Purple Original) while a queen is priced at $2,749. The good news is that you'll never have to pay that; regular mattress sales brings a queen down to $1,399.

Purple Original vs Puffy Lux Hybrid Mattress: Materials & Design

  •  The Purple Original has a unique GelFlex Grid layer for a unique feel
  •  The Puffy lux has a hybrid construction with 6 layers of foam and coils
  •  The final layer of a Puffy Lux is a removable stain-resistant cover

Like the best mattresses in a box, the Purple and Puffy Lux Hybrid Mattress are mechanically compressed, tightly rolled and packed into a box for delivery direct to your door.

The Purple Original is a foam mattress which has a unique GelFlex Grid layer just below the soft breathable and stretchy cover. This is designed to be responsive and adapt to the sleeper’s body and provide cushioning comfort. It also dissipates heat because of its open structure and gives pressure relieving support.

Beneath this is the edge support foam, comfort foam and the base support foam, which adds in the sturdiness to the entire bed. However, during our Purple mattress review, our lead tester noted that at 9.5" tall mattress to be one of the “shallowest beds” they'd slept on.

The Puffy Lux has a hybrid build of both foams and coils. This features a Grip Base at the bottom, a support core of a 7" layer of individually pocketed coils surrounded by high-density foam.

Above this, a humidity-resistant foam which regulates temperature followed by a layer of pressure relieving foam and gel-infused foam (each 1.5"). This six layer mattress comes encased in a stain-resistant cover which can also be removed and machine washed.

Purple Original vs Puffy Lux mattress: Comfort & Support

  • Both mattresses feature strong motion isolation
  • We rate the Purple as 7/10 for firmness and the Puffy Lux as 5/10
  • Puffy Lux is best suited to lightweight side sleepers

Our reviewers found the Purple Original to be a solid 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale, making it both cushioning and supportive. The foam construction gives a cradling sensation while the GelFlex Grid layer gives ample support, making it suitable for all sleeping styles.

During testing, it provided excellent pressure relief by distributing weight evenly across the bed. However, edge support could be better. Comfort aside, our panel felt that the Purple Original was too heavy for a bed-in-a-box, easily taking at least two people to unpack and set it up.

During our Puffy Lux Hybrid Mattress review, our lead tester gave it a firmness rating of 5/10, placing it in the plush category. Lightweight side sleepers will likely find the Lux to be most comfortable, with our side sleeping reviewer noting that her hips sank too low while sleeping, which indicates that it won't provide enough support for most sleepers.

Purple Original vs Puffy Lux Mattress: Temperature Regulation

  •  Both mattress offer excellent temperature regulation
  •  The Puffy scored 4.5  out of 5 with its hybrid design
  •  Our review panel recommends Purple even for hot sleepers

The Purple Original ranks highly in our best cooling mattress guide, thanks to its combination of pressure relief and impressive temperature control, This is largely thanks to the open structure of the GelFlex layer, which prevents warm air from becoming trapped within the bed (a common complaint among all-foam beds,) the 2,800 open air channels which promotes a cool sleep and the soft breathable cover which keeps you refreshed all night.

Like most hybrid beds, Puffy Lux too proved to have great temperature thanks to the open coil system which aids airflow, a climate comfort foam placed above this and a gel-infused layer which dissipates heat throughout the night. Our reviewer gave the Puffy a very strong score of 4.5 out of 5 for temperature regulation.

Purple Original vs Puffy Lux Mattress: Which should you buy?

Buy the Purple Original mattress if:

You need a medium firm bed: The Purple Original adapts to your body and gives contouring support for all sleeping positions, even for back-sleeping which requires extra support.

You need a mid-range mattress: While the Purple is on the pricier side compared to other foam beds, it is not a premium purchase like the Puffy (although you'll always be able to get the Puffy on sale.)

You want pressure relief: Purple's unique GelFlex layer contours and adapts to the body in a similar way to memory, helping remove a build up of pressure around the touch-points of the bed.

Buy the Puffy Lux if…

You prefer a hybrid mattress: The Puffy Lux is made of individually wrapped coils for support and foam layers for comfort. Coils help provide a responsive sleep feel and promote airflow throughout the bed.

You’re lightweight side sleeper: Our review panel found the Puffy Lux mattress to be extra plush and soft, which makes it best for lightweight side sleepers as you won’t sink too far into the bed.

You want a deeper bed: Compared to the shallow Purple mattress which stands at 9.5" tall, the Puffy Lux Hybrid is deeper at 11.5" tall. A deeper bed usually indicates more supportive layers.
