Is Leesa's new Studio Chill cooling mattress worth buying? We tried it to find out
Leesa's new mid-range cooling mattress in a box faces stiff competition from Cocoon by Sealy and Nectar
The Leesa Studio Chill Hybrid Mattress is a part of Leesa's new line-up of cooling beds. With its mid-range price point – a queen-size is normally on sale for $959 or less – it's meant to provide temperature-neutral sleep for hot sleepers on a smaller budget.
Type: Hybrid
Firmness (1-10): Medium (We rate it a 7)
Height: 12"
Trial period: 100 nights
Warranty: 10 years
Sale price: From $648 at Leesa
So does this budget-friendly cooling mattress live up to its promises? Leesa makes some of the best mattresses we've tested this year so we were expecting good things from the Studio Chill Hybrid. To put it to the test, our sleep team visited the showroom of 3Z Brands (Leesa's parent company) in Arizona to sit, lie on and perform a series of drop-tests on the Studio Chill Hybrid.
After performing this hands-on review, we found the Studio Chill delivers a medium-firm feel with excellent edge support and minimal motion transfer, making it a great choice for combination sleepers and couples. However, if you're looking for state-of-the-art temperature control, you may want to choose a more advanced cooling bed.
Still, the Studio Chill is much more affordable than many of the best cooling mattresses, and we expect to see bigger discounts from Leesa during Black Friday mattress sales. Read on to see how well the Leesa Studio Chill Hybrid fared in our hands-on review...
Leesa Studio Chill Hybrid: was from $865 $648 at Leesa
This is the least expensive of Leesa's cooling lineup, and a solid price for a specialty bed in general. There's currently a 20% off deal on the Studio Chill, with a queen size down to $899 (was $1,199). This is an evergreen discount, but we expect to see 30% off closer to Black Friday. Extras include a 100-night trial, a 10-year warranty, and free delivery.
Leesa Studio Chill Hybrid mattress: Price
- A mid-range bed and the cheapest of Leesa's cooling mattresses
- Discounts range from 20% to 30% throughout the year
- Extras include a 100-night sleep trial and a 10-year warranty
The Studio Chill is the most affordable mattress out of Leesa's cooling bed collection. The other three cooling mattresses (the Legend Chill, the Sapira Chill, and the Oasis Chill) all have starting prices of over $1,000 at MSRP. At full retail, the Studio Chill is priced at $865 for a twin, which is dropped to $692 or less thanks to ongoing sales
Below are the MSRPs for the Leesa Studio Chill and the current sale price after 20% off:
- Twin MSRP: $865 (currently $648)
- Twin XL MSRP: $899 MSRP (currently $674)
- Full MSRP: $1,079 (currently $809)
- Queen MSRP: $1,199 (currently $899)
- King MSRP: $1,439 (currently $1,079)
- Cal king MSRP: $1,439 (currently $1,079)
With a queen usually reduced to $959 or less, this is much cheaper than most specialist cooling mattresses, which are rarely sold under $1,000 in that size. But it's still not the cheapest cooling mattress on the market – the all-foam Cocoon by Sealy Chill Mattress is usually sold at just $699 for a queen, and testers for our Cocoon by Sealy Chill mattress review loved how cool it slept for a lower mid-range foam bed.
However, the standard sale prices are not the lowest you'll see on this mattress. Leesa regularly rolls out a 30% off sale on their mattresses during holiday events, such as Memorial Day and Labor Day. This means you could soon see a 30% discount on the Studio Chill near this year's Black Friday sales. We've also seen flashes of 25% off at other points of the year.
The extras are good but pretty standard. They include free delivery, a 100-night sleep trial, and a 10-year warranty. Leesa also throws in free accessories – usually a pair of pillows but also a sheet set on occasion.
Leesa Studio Chill Hybrid mattress: Design
- A 12" hybrid mattress with five layers
- Features zoned lumbar support
- Cooling cover has an expensive, stylish look
The Leesa Studio Chill is designed to be a cooling hybrid spin-off of the Leesa Studio, and it follows a similar design to most beds in our best hybrid mattress guide.
It begins with a quilted phase-change cover designed to pull away body heat. Directly below that is quilted foam designed to resist body impressions. The next layer is copper-infused memory foam – the copper is added for an antibacterial, cooling touch – followed by a layer of ventilated comfort foam for extra breathability.
Then we have the the zoned support layer. This tier consists of up to 1,032 individually wrapped springs for healthy spinal alignment and a body-cradling feel. The springs are firmer in the middle for enhanced lower back support, with higher-gauge coils on the sides for stronger edges. These layers are supported by a stable base layer of high-density foam for support and durability.
Leesa mattresses contain no fiberglass, instead using a fire-resistant rayon fiber. The foams within are CertiPUR-US certified, while the mattress as a whole is GREENGUARD Gold-certified, ensuring safe materials for your home and sleep health.
Leesa Studio Chill Hybrid mattress: Comfort & pressure relief
- A medium-firm mattress that we rate as a 7/10 on the firmness scale
- Responsive feel that's great for restless or combination sleepers
- Some higher side sleepers may need deeper pressure relief
While we always recommend sleeping on a mattress for at least 30 nights to properly gauge whether it's right for you or not, we did manage to perform several in-depth tests on the Leesa Studio Chill in our brief time with it.
Our testing methodology included measuring the Studio Chill's pressure relief, which involved placing a 35lb weight in the center of the mattress and measuring how far it sank in inches. We found that the weight sank around 2.5", which is what you'd expect from a medium-firm mattress.
Each member of our testing panel then took turns lying on the bed in different sleep positions. We found it to be most comfortable for back and side sleepers, especially those who prefer to sleep 'on' the mattress rather than 'in' it. However, if you're a side sleeper who craves the ultra-cradling hug of memory foam, look at our Leesa Legend Hybrid mattress hands-on review.
On the other hand, we all agreed the mattress had the potential to provide more cradling relief along the shoulders after a week or two of usage. Also consider that our test model had not been roll-packed, which could have had an impact on the overall feel.
The medium-firm feel and responsiveness make it good for those who change positions throughout the night. Its cradling but supportive surface should accommodate most positions, while restless sleepers will find it easy to move on. However, one of our front-sleeping testers did mention that she wished there had been more support along the hip region when resting on her stomach.
Overall, we'd recommend the Leesa Studio Chill to most side sleepers, back-and-side combination sleepers, and lightweight back and stomach sleepers.
Leesa Studio Chill Hybrid mattress: Performance
- Reinforced side coils provide great edge support
- Great motion isolation for a hybrid bed
- Not cool to the touch – but not stuffy, either
Our hands-on review incorporates the mattress methodology we follow for standard mattress reviews. We evaluated the edge support, motion isolation, temperature regulation, and setup of a queen-size Leesa Studio Chill. Here's what we learned...
Edge support
The Studio Chill's edge support impressed us the most. During our objective test, we placed a 35lb weight in the middle of the mattress’s perimeter and measured the depth it sank. The sides barely sank over 2", indicating ultra-sturdy edges. Even the corner felt stable, only sinking 2.5". That stability was reflected in our real-world results, as well. Not once did we feel we were going to roll out of bed.
Thus, we highly recommend it to those with mobility issues who struggle to get in and out of bed. It'll also suit those who like to get dressed while sitting on the edge of the bed, and anyone who feels the need to use up every inch of the mattress's surface: stomach sleepers, restless sleepers, and bed-sharing couples.
Motion isolation
Motion isolation refers to how much you can feel your restless partner's movements when they toss and turn or get in or out of bed. To measure the motion isolation of the Studio Chill, we dropped an 18lb weight from 4" above the surface of the mattress, placing a wine glass 4", 10", and 25 inches" from the center. We then observed the movement of the wine glass to see whether it would fall over.
When dropping the weight from 25" and 12" away, the glass barely wobbled. Only when the weight was dropped from 4" away did it fall over, indicating strong motion isolation in most instances. Our testing crew took turns getting in and out of bed and changing positions with one person lying down, and their movements largely went unnoticed.
Temperature regulation
The Studio Chill is designed to provide cooling on a budget, but does it fulfill that promise?
We tested the mattress without any bedding in a heavily air-conditioned showroom in Phoenix, Arizona, so we weren't able to effectively gauge how cooling it would be when going through night sweats on a hot evening.
While the mattress didn't feel as though it would sleep warm, it didn't have that immediate cool-to-the-touch feel of GlacioTex, a heat-dissipating material found in several popular cooling beds. That said, we never felt warm or stuffy while resting on the bed in our day clothes in different positions.
We were also impressed with the look of the mattress's cover, with one of our reviewers commenting on how inviting its monochrome design was. We felt the Studio Chill's overall aesthetic was sleek, modern, and expensive-looking.
Setup
We didn't set up our Studio Chill test mattress per se, but we did have to haul it from one bed frame to another. At 87lbs for a queen-size, it was certainly a two to three-person job for us. The lack of side handles made it a bit cumbersome to move, as well.
Leesa Studio Chill Hybrid mattress: User reviews
Oddly, there's no way to access individual user reviews for the Leesa Studio Chill, despite the mattress being nearly a year old at this point. Browsing the general Leesa reviews page doesn't yield very many results for this particular model, either, although the few we were able to glean are positive.
Should you buy it the Leesa Studio Chill mattress?
Buy the Leesa Studio Chill Hybrid mattress if...
✅ You need a more affordable cooling bed: The Studio Chill sits in the mid-range price bracket, which makes it one of the most affordable cooling mattress on the market
✅ You share a bed: The Studio Chill has great motion isolation, so you won't feel a restless partner's movements. Its strong edge support means you can also use every inch of the mattress (even the edges) without worrying you're going to roll out of bed
✅ You need ease of movement: The sturdy edges means you can get in and out of bed with ease, and the responsive feel is perfect for those who like to change position throughout the night.
Don't buy the Leesa Studio Chill Hybrid mattress if...
❌ You get severe night sweats: Avoid the Studio Chill if you severely overheat at night and can afford a more state-of-the-art cooling mattress, like the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe mattress.
❌ You prefer an ultra-soft memory foam feel: While side sleepers who like to sleep on the mattress instead of in it will enjoy the responsive medium-firm feel, side sleepers expecting the sink-in softness of memory foam will be disappointed.
❌ You're strictly a stomach sleeper: Some front sleepers may need more support in the hip region. Browse our guide to the best mattresses for stomach sleepers if that's what you need.
Leesa Studio Chill Hybrid mattress: Bottom line
For a cooling mattress, the Leesa Studio Chill Hybrid is among the best values out there, with a queen going for under $900 during regular sales. It may not be as powerful as the other cooling models in Leesa's lineup, but we still found it quite comfortable, with a responsive surface that should make combi sleepers happy. Couples will appreciate the sturdy edges and top-notch motion isolation, too.
