Is the Leesa Legend Hybrid mattress worth it? Here's our hands-on review
Our first impression of Leesa's luxe mattress for side sleepers
The Leesa Legend Hybrid is a luxury mattress that promises extra pressure relief for side sleepers with a mix of foams, pocket coils, and microcoils, all wrapped in a soft, eco-friendly cover. Right now, you can save up to $600 on the Leesa Legend Hybrid at Leesa Sleep, with a queen costing $2,079 (was $2,599). But is it worth buying? Our side-sleeping mattress testers were lucky enough to visit the Leesa showroom in Arizona and conduct a hands-on review of the Legend.
Type: Hybrid
Firmness (1-10): 2-4 (we rate it a 6)
Height: 12"
Trial period: 100 nights
Warranty: 10 years
Price: From $1,899 at Leesa at full MSRP
Granted, this isn't quite the thorough testing period the beds in our best mattress guide undergo, but our team of experienced reviewers was able to inspect the Leesa Legend Hybrid, lie on it, and conduct a series of objective performance tests. Our conclusion? Leesa hit the mark on this one, as our team found it immediately comfortable for side sleeping — though not so much for front or back sleeping.
The Leesa Legend Hybrid is a premium bed, but it's always discounted so you never pay full price. A queen-size usually sells for around $1,949 with a pair of pillows, a 100-night trial, and a 10-year warranty thrown in. However, we're expecting bigger savings than normal during the upcoming Black Friday mattress sales. Curious to learn more? Here's what you can expect from the Leesa Legend Hybrid mattress...
Leesa Legend Hybrid Mattress: Price
- A premium hybrid mattress in the broader market
- Regular sales cut 20% to 25% off — or 30% off during holidays
- Comes with two free pillows (and sometimes a sheet set)
The Leesa Legend Hybrid is one of the brand's most expensive mattresses. Even after the regular Leesa sales, this is a premium bed among the wider market, with a queen-size mattress retailing for $2,599 at full MSRP.
Here's a breakdown of the pricing and sizes for the Leesa Legend Hybrid mattress:
- Twin: $1,899 MSRP (normally sells for $1,519)
- Twin XL: $1,999 MSRP (normally sells for $1,599)
- Full: $2,299 MSRP (normally sells for $1,839)
- Queen: $2,599 MSRP (normally sells for $2,079)
- King: $2,999 MSRP (normally sells for $2,399)
- Cal king: $2,999 MSRP (normally sells for $2,399)
There's always a sale at Leesa. We've seen the current 20% discount for most of the year. You'll also get two free pillows with your purchase. However, the savings increase around the major holidays, such as Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Black Friday. During these sales, the discount bumps as high as 30%, while the freebies are upgraded to a full set of sheets plus pillows. Waiting for these specialty deals to drop can potentially save you over $100 more. But if you need a new bed right away, the evergreen Leesa sale is still appealing.
Leesa also offers a 100-night sleep trial and a 10-year warranty across all its adult mattresses, including the Legend Hybrid. These are standard extras, so while they aren't bad, we might expect something more for a mattress at this price point.
Leesa Legend Hybrid mattress: from $1,899 $1,519 + 2 free pillows at Leesa
The Leesa Legend Hybrid mattress is a premium bed, but the evergreen Leesa sale can typically save you 20% on the MSRP. This reduces a queen from $2,599 to $2,079, and you get two free pillows, a 100-night trial, and a 10-year warranty. But if you don't mind waiting for a new mattress, we expect to see a bigger saving for Black Friday.
Leesa Legend Hybrid mattress: Design
- A 12" mattress with a dual spring layer, plus multiple foam comfort layers
- A zoned foam and microcoil layer increases support in the central third
- Cover is a blend of organic cotton, Merino wool, and recycled fibers
The Leesa Legend Hybrid mattress has a complex design, with multiple layers of foams and springs. The whole mattress is wrapped in a breathable cover made using organic cotton, Merino wool, and polyester from recycled water bottles. The overall finish is simple, with the classic Leesa striped design adding some visual interest.
The topmost layer of comfort foam has air channels to enhance breathability and improve adaptability. Beneath this is a layer of dense memory foam for full body contouring. Following that are foams and microsprings combined in one single layer, with a zoned design to add maximum support at the lumbar. With springs at the head and feet, and foam zoned to the center, this layer is all about support.
A layer of transition foam gives way to a bed of full-size springs made from recycled steel, each individually wrapped to limit motion transfer. Around the perimeter is a higher concentration of smaller springs to boost the edge support while a final layer of base foam brings stability to the entire interior.
The Leesa Legend Hybrid is a fiberglass-free mattress with a cellulose-derived rayon fiber as a fire barrier. It also features CertiPUR-US certified foams and is GREENGUARD Gold certified, ensuring low emissions and no toxic chemicals.
Leesa Legend Hybrid mattress: Comfort & relief
- A medium feel; we rate it around 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale
- Has an immediately plush, sink-in, body-hugging feel
- Ideal for side sleepers but lacks support for back and front sleepers
The Leesa Legend Hybrid might feature dual spring layers, but it's the upper comfort foams that dominate the feel. As soon as you sit on the bed you can feel the Legend Hybrid contour to your body, with a squishiness that brings to mind the classic hug of the best memory foam mattresses.
Leesa uses customer feedback to inform their firmness rating — firmness is notoriously subjective — with the Legend described as medium-plush. Our testers largely agree, rating it around 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale, with 10 indicating ultra-firm. While it has an immediate sink-in plushness, there's still a stable support underneath.
The best mattresses for side sleepers typically have excellent contouring, to ease pressure at the touch points shoulders (and hips). The Leesa Legend Hybrid delivers this in spades, with an oozy foam feel that hugs the body from head to toe. The pressure relief is apparent from the moment your shoulder first hits the bed, and all our testers were comfortable in a side sleeping position.
Back and stomach sleepers, however, should look for something firmer. Our testing panel unanimously agreed that the body-hugging feel is uncomfortable for front sleeping, and while very lightweight back sleepers might enjoy the softer support, we predict an achy lumbar if you spend all night in this position.
There is zoned support in the center of the bed, and our objective tests show it has some effect — our weight sank more at the head (3.5") of the bed than in the middle (3"), indicating strength in the center. But our testers felt this support could be improved, with our average weight sleepers wanting more elevation at the hips.
The slow-moving foams and adaptable microcoils cradle the body throughout the night, but this 'hug' effect can be divisive. If you like to move around in your sleep, the Legend Hybrid can be constraining.
Leesa is a brand with an eco-focus, and the cover is made using fibers from recycled water bottles. It sounds like a strange material choice, but our testers agreed the surface is soft against the body. You'd never guess it was once a drinks container. However, for a premium-priced mattress, the Leesa Legend Hybrid doesn't have the luxury finish of other beds in this bracket.
Leesa Legend Hybrid mattress: Performance
- Average edge support
- Decent motion isolation
- Cooling upgrades available
Despite not having the time we normally do for a full-fledged mattress review, we still followed our mattress methodology by evaluating the edge support, motion isolation, temperature regulation, and setup of a queen-size Leesa Legend Hybrid. Here's what we found...
Edge support
The best hybrid mattresses tend to have superior edge support thanks to a concentration of firmer coils, offering a stable perimeter to sit, lie, and push against. The Leesa Legend Hybrid features extra springs around the sides of the mattress to boost this support.
To objectively test the edges, we placed a 35lb weight on the side and corner of the mattress and measured how far it sank. The weight was secure when balanced on the side, sinking less than it did at the center of the bed (2.5"). And although it wobbled when balancing on the corner, we still observed less sink than we did at the center at 2.75". This indicates the Legend Hybrid is stronger at the perimeter.
Our testers felt comfortable lying on the side of the bed, but sitting on the side was less stable, and the corners were more precarious. You sink through the foams before you reach the secure base of the springs, which gives the edges a slightly 'collapsing' feel. Most sleepers should feel at ease, but those with limited mobility should look for firmer sides.
Motion isolation
To test motion isolation, one tester relaxed on the mattress as another got on the bed, moved around, and climbed off again. We then repeated, with each tester trying each role. The Leesa Legend Hybrid performed relatively well in these subjective tests. We all felt we could sleep through most nighttime disturbances.
Of course, it's hard to test if movement will wake you up when you aren't asleep — so we did some objective testing as well. Balancing a wine glass on the mattress where a person would normally sleep, we held an 18lb weight 4" above the surface of the mattress, dropping it from different distances.
With the weight dropped from 25" away, the wine glass barely wobbled. From 12" away, the wobble was noticeable, and from 4" away, the glass fell over. This confirms our subjective tests: good for most couples, but if you're a light sleeper and your partner is very restless, consider the steadier Leesa Sapira Hybrid Mattress instead.
Temperature regulation
This is admittedly hard for us to gauge based on a hands-on review, but the Leesa Legend Hybrid does have some things going for it when it comes to temperature regulation – a dual layer of springs (pocket coils and microcoils), an aerated top layer of foam, and a breathable cover made from organic cotton and Merino wool.
On the other hand, if you deal with chronic night sweats, a specialty cooling mattress may be a better choice. The Leesa Legend Chill Hybrid adds a pillow-top embedded with phase-change fibers that give it a cool-to-the-touch sensation.
Setup
The Leesa Legend Hybrid is a mattress in a box and it comes with free delivery. That means the boxed bed will be sent to your door, but you have to unpack it. (Our queen-size test unit had never been roll-packed.)
We did have a chance to move the Legend Hybrid across the 3Z Brands showroom and while it isn't the heaviest mattress, a second pair of hands is welcome. There are no handles, so it's hard to get a good grip – something to keep in mind when it comes time to rotate your mattress.
Leesa Legend Hybrid mattress: User reviews
As of September 2024, the Leesa Legend Hybrid has a 4.3-star rating out of 5 from over 230 reviews. You can sort reviews by date, star rating, and keywords – as well as limit your search to reviews with accompanying photos or videos.
Most of the reviews are five stars, with Leesa shoppers praising its plush yet supportive feel for side sleeping. Negative reviews either call the mattress too soft or too firm, with some customers critiquing the quality of the build.
Should you buy the Leesa Legend Hybrid mattress?
Buy the Leesa Legend Hybrid mattress if...
✅ You like a sink-in memory foam feel: The Leesa Legend Hybrid is defined by its body-hugging comfort foams that ease around you as you sink into the bed, for a feel reminiscent of the best Tempur-Pedic mattresses.
✅ You sleep exclusively on your side: A true side sleeper mattress, the Leesa Legend Hybrid cushions the touch points while still providing stable support.
✅ You want full body pressure relief: Dense foams soften pressure across the body, with micro springs cradling the knees and shoulders. You should be able to lie all night on your side without going numb.
Don't buy the Leesa Legend Hybrid mattress if...
❌ You sleep on your back or stomach: Lightweight back sleepers might appreciate the pressure relief of the Leesa Legend Hybrid but average to heavy back sleepers will need more support. It's definitely not a stomach sleeper mattress.
❌ You like to change position in the night: The slow-moving foams hug and hold the body, which makes moving around a bit of a struggle. If you prefer a mattress you lie on top of, consider the Leesa Studio Chill, which skews firmer.
❌ You want a luxury look: Despite the premium price, the Leesa Legend Hybrid doesn't have the sumptuous finish we expect from the best luxury mattresses. However, the overall build quality appears to be good.
Leesa Legend Hybrid mattress: Bottom line
The Leesa Legend Hybrid boasts a mix of foam and microcoils to replicate the comforting, body-hugging sensation of the best memory foam mattresses, along with a bed of individually wrapped springs for added support. For the price you pay, it may appear a little too 'basic,' but we encourage you to look beyond the covers – it's a comfortable side sleepers' mattress that's capable of doing the little things well.
