Ecosa Pure mattress review: micro coils, adjustable firmness and a washable cover

Ecosa began as a small Australian startup in 2015 with just one mattress. Several years later, the brand is a major player, selling mattresses in countries around the world. Ecosa also has a commitment to sustainability and is B Corp certified, proudly noting it is Australia’s most sustainable mattress and sleep solutions company. This means it uses natural and recycled materials where possible, as well as sustainably sourced wood for its furniture products.

Ecosa has seven different mattresses in its lineup, including options for cots and kids. The Pure mattress reviewed here is the most expensive option, despite a surprisingly affordable price considering the premium features. Ecosa also has the Essence mattress (a very low cost hybrid pocket spring model), the affordable yet adjustable Ecosa mattress, the Align Firm mattress for those who want extra support, and the CoolComfort mattress, that’s designed specifically to give extra breathability for hot sleepers.

Ecosa provided a king-size Pure mattress for this review, and we tested it over a period of three months.

Ecosa Pure mattress: Review in brief

The Ecosa Pure mattress has a few key features that set it apart from the competition. Like some other mattress models, it has a flippable top layer that can be used to adjust from medium-plush to medium-firm. But uniquely, this layer includes 2,444 micro coils rather than just foam, which gives not just evenly distributed support but also increased breathability.

While other mattresses mostly use polyurethane foams, the Pure also has a layer of latex foam, with holes for increased airflow. Under that, it has an array of pocket springs, with 5 zones of support, as well as specific springs for edge support. To make cleaning easier, the cover of the Pure is completely removable, and can be thrown in the wash.

The mattress is available in double, queen and king sizes — all of which are 29cm thick. Ecosa backs the Pure with a longer-than-average 15-year warranty, giving excellent peace of mind.

We tested the Ecosa Pure through the warmth of late summer and the start of cooler autumn nights. We did some of our testing without air conditioning to assess breathability, then blasted it at 16ºC to simulate cooler nights. The micro coils do help give much improved breathability compared to mattresses using just foam for the upper layers, and it will suit hot sleepers. It does tend towards a firmer feel, but gives excellent support, with no pressure points and good spine alignment. There is some partner disturbance, but it’s no worse than other hybrid models.

Edge support is top notch, and you can sleep to the sides or sit on the end without a problem. The 29cm thickness won’t make a bed feel too high, and normal sheets fit fine without slipping off. The focus on pocket springs and micro coils (not to mention latex) does mean the Pure is rather heavy. It weighs in at 69kg for the king, 57.9kg for the queen and 50 kg for the double. This is significantly above average, and our gas-lift storage bed wasn't able to keep the mattress raised. The weight also makes it harder to fit sheets. The Pure does have nice, strong side handles, but considering the weight, it’s slightly frustrating that it doesn’t also include end handles.

Read on for our full thoughts, but overall the Ecosa Pure mattress offers unique and premium features, and when discounted, the price is quite affordable. It’s a great option for hot sleepers, as well as those who like a very supportive mattress.

Ecosa Pure mattress review: Delivery, returns and warranty

The Pure mattress includes free next-day delivery during the week in metro areas, and it will be carried to your door or placed in the room of your choice for no extra cost. There’s no weekend delivery option like Koala offers. Non-metro areas will take up to 7 business days for delivery, and some remote locations may incur an additional AU$175 fee. There’s also an optional extra during checkout where you can have your old mattress taken away and recycled for AU$125.

All the mattresses include a 100-night trial period, and Ecosa recommends sleeping on it for at least two weeks – though we think it’s worth doing a full month (or 30 days). The returns process is organised through local charities, who will collect, clean and donate the mattress. Outside of metro areas, Ecosa's customer service will work with you on a solution to facilitate a return.

All Ecosa mattresses are backed up by a 15-year warranty, covering any material failures or lasting indentations deeper than 20mm. That’s a better-than-average warranty and gives peace of mind that your Ecosa mattress is going to be comfy and problem-free for a long time. Ecosa does mention in the warranty that the mattress needs to be treated according to the care instructions to ensure the warranty is valid. This amounts to basic cleaning care, and there is no need to rotate the mattress or any restrictions on bed base types, aside from allowing space for air to circulate if using the mattress on the floor.

Ecosa Pure mattress review: Design and materials

The Ecosa Pure mattress design is a bit different to most hybrid mattresses, which gives some advantages and disatvantages. But rest assured, all Ecosa mattresses are CertiPUR-US and STANDARD 100 OEKO-TEX certified as using safe and non-toxic materials.

Starting from the top, the Pure uses a removable, machine washable cover made from Tencel (polyster) that includes recycled materials in the fabric and zip. Under the cover is a flippable upper layer, which itself is made from multiple materials. The first is a layer of latex like foam, bonded to memory foam, to give a soft sleeping surface. Going deeper, it has up to 2,444 micro coils that provide space for additional airflow as well as give even support. Under the micro coils is a layer of latex, which includes holes to to maintain that airflow. These layers are bundled together and can be flipped to go from a medium-firm rating (with the memory foam at the top), or slightly firmer, if the latex is at the top.

The flippable upper layer sits on top of pocket springs (up to 2,250 in the king size) that includes 5-zoned ergonomic support to help avoid pressure points, as well as firmer springs at the end and sides for edge support. Finally there is the (non-removable) base cover that has non-slip coating underneath to help ensure the mattress does not move around.

Overall this creates a design that gives above-average breathability, while also providing adjustable support that will suit those prone to back issues.

Ecosa Pure mattress review: Firmness and comfort

With the top layer in the default configuration, the medium-plush rating for the mattress is reasonably accurate, though it tends to feel more like medium-firm. Flipping the upper layer makes the mattress firmer, and while Ecosa rates it as medium-firm, we found it slightly firmer than that, though still less than an actual firm mattress.

The micro coils give very even support compared to foam by itself (which gets harder the more it compresses), and while the feel isn’t quite as plush when initially settling in, we found it did a great job of avoiding any pressure points no matter the sleeping position. This is notable, as one (out of two) of the reviewers is much taller and heavier than average, yet had no problem with side sleeping. Spine alignment is also good and the Pure mattress helped soothe existing lower-back pain.

We also tested the Pure mattress after adding a memory foam topper, as well as a plush padded overlay. As expected, breathability is reduced by any extra layers, but it worked well to add a little more softness if needed. We also tested the mattress with an electric blanket and found it didn’t tend to trap any heat, making it easier to fine tune the temperature.

Ecosa Pure mattress review: Performance

Many aspects of mattress comfort are rather subjective, whereas other performance metrics are more easily quantified. We’ve gone through all the important factors below to help provide a deeper understanding of the features offered by the Ecosa mattress, and how they might help improve your sleep experience.

After buying a new mattress, it’s important to sleep on it for at least a month before making any decisions — and two months is even better. It takes time for your body and muscles to adapt to the new style of support, and what feels uncomfortable or different at first may be much more comfortable after a little time has passed. The reverse is also true — a very soft, plush mattress feels amazing for the first few weeks, but after a month or two, spine alignment issues can build up, leading to poor sleep.

Like all other mattresses-in-a-box, the Ecosa Pure is shipped in one very heavy box, so handling it can be tricky. The box has a handle on one end, but in our case that had already ripped out earlier in the delivery process, which made it rather unwieldy. The box has wheels at one end, but they are not well suited to the weight, and allow the box to drag on the ground. The wheels also have metal supports and screws which can very easily scratch the floor of your home. We advise not wheeling it indoors and have the delivery company carry it in and place it on the floor with the wheels on the upper side.

The extra weight also means getting the mattress out of the box, unwrapped, then unrolled on the bed is harder than normal, and you absolutely need two people for the job if getting the king-size model. Using the included cutter to open the plastic bag and letting the mattress expand is very satisfying. The mattress does have side handles (but no end handles) which makes it easier to position on your bed or move around. For such a heavy mattress, we really wish Ecosa had included both side and end handles. On the plus side, the handles are strong and well attached, so while they strained a little, they could take the weight of the mattress.

The Ecosa mattress measures in at 29cm thick, and normal sheets and mattress protectors fit without an issue. Ecosa notes that the mattress does not need to be flipped or rotated regularly.

Off-gassing

When opening the sealed packaging of a mattress, any volatile gases trapped in the layers are released, and an initial plasticky odour is expected and completely normal. The Ecosa Pure is better than most in this regard, with a small amount of odour (mostly from the upper layer) that quickly dissipates. We set up the mattress during the day, and by the evening there was almost no smell even up close, and sleeping on the mattress right away was perfectly fine.

All Ecosa mattresses are CertiPUR-US and STANDARD 100 OEKO-TEX certified as using safe and non-toxic materials, so the small amount of smell produced isn’t harmful at all.

Pressure relief

Two reviewers of different height and weight slept on the Pure mattress during testing. The foam, latex and micro coil upper layer has a slightly different feel to a typical hybrid mattress, or one made from just foam. While it feels quite firm at first, the micro coils keep an even pressure when adapting to your body, and in our testing there were no pressure points created. This includes for a tall, heavy side sleeper, who is prone to issues with pressure points on the hips and shoulders.

The Ecosa Pure mattress has 5 zones of support in the underlying pocket springs, which help maintain optimum spine alignment. Both reviewers are prone to lower back pain and stiffness if using a mattress that doesn't help facilitate good sleep posture, and the mattress did an excellent job of providing support without being uncomfortable. The mattress did feel firmer than other higher-priced options like the Eva Premium Adapt but was just as comfortable to sleep on after an initial adjustment period.

Temperature regulation

Even with air-conditioning, a mattress without decent breathability will be uncomfortable during a scorching Australian summer. And when cooler weather prevails, the same lack of airflow and moisture wicking can quickly build up humidity, leading to clammy sleep. Overall the Ecosa Pure mattress does an above-average job of maintaining a steady sleep temperature during both hot and cold nights. It’s one of the more breathable mattresses we have tested, and might only bested by specialty models like the Ecosa CoolComfort mattress (which we are yet to test). While the mattress cover is machine washable, using a breathable mattress protector (we favour cotton or bamboo) didn’t create any problems with increased heat retention.

Edge support

The Pure mattress uses pocket springs, and has a special firmer layer at the sides and end of the bed. This gives great edge support, and we had no problem sleeping right to the sides or sitting on the end of the mattress. As the extra firmness is in the pocket springs, the top layer does still compress a lot at the edges, but it doesn’t reduce how well the edge support works.

Motion transfer

The pocket spring and foam / micro coil upper layer construction of the Ecosa Pure does a pretty good job of dampening out any motion. It’s not as good as an all-foam or latex mattress, and a little bit more movement can be felt than with a softer hybrid model, but it’s not enough to worry anyone but the lightest sleepers.

Normal movements in bed, such as a partner tossing and turning, are mostly dampened out, and much of the remaining motion transfer comes via the sheets. The mattress did tend to transfer sharper movements, such as if accidentally bumping into the side when getting in or out of bed, but with a little care this is easily avoided.

Durability

The Ecosa Pure mattress held up perfectly (as expected) during our testing, and there was no sign of any wear or sagging. Combined with the long 15-year warranty, we have no doubt the mattress will give great sleep for a long time. The quality of the fabric is good, the stitching uses robust thread and zips, and the cover is reinforced where needed. The lack of end handles is frustrating — though at least the side handles are strong and well attached. It’s also very useful to be able to remove the top cover entirely and throw it in the wash when it needs a clean.

Ecosa Pure: user reviews

At the time of writing, on productreview.com.au (Australia’s most popular consumer opinion site) the Ecosa Pure mattress only has 54 reviews (49 of them 5 star) and an overall 4.8 star rating. Ecosa does offer incentives for reviews, but these are offered for positive or negative feedback and meet the conditions to count as a fair incentive. Of the 13 reviews that are not incentivised, only 3 are not 5-star.

The reviews offer a little extra insight into the things other customers find good or bad about the mattress. The majority of users rate the Ecosa mattress as medium-firm while one feels it is hard, and another considers it soft. Very few reviews call out any specific issue, and the Ecosa team has been active and quick to address any problems, including defects covered under warranty. The single 1-star had slightly delayed shipping, and other issues that include being unhappy about needing to take photos to show the Ecosa team a perceived problem.

Overall, customers are very happy with their Ecosa Pure mattress, and the reviews don’t flag any potential problems beyond what we have already covered in this review.

Should I buy the Ecosa Pure mattress?

For anyone after a premium mattress experience, without going overboard on price, the Ecosa Pure is a worthy option to consider. The micro coil springs, adjustable firmness and washable cover are all great features to have, and a cut above what’s included with the more basic mattresses. It's also one of the most breathable mattresses we've tested.

Of course it’s not perfect, and the extra weight means it’s harder to slide forward on a bed when fitting sheets, and may not work with a gas-lift storage bed. The supportive upper layer also takes a little extra time to get used to, and may feel firmer than you are used to at first.

Overall though it’s very comfortable, and the extra breathability will be appreciated by hot sleepers. Plus you can try it without risk thanks to the 100-night trial and rest assured it’s backed by a long 15-year warranty.
