Tom's Guide Verdict
We placed the hypoallergenic Coop Home Goods Ultra Tech Waterproof Mattress Protector through multiple spill, wash and dry tests and found it to be fully waterproof, noiseless, and with no shrinkage after washing. It performs very well for the mid-range price ($49 for a queen size), offering superb protection against spilled drinks, body oils and sweat, as well as being resistant to dust mites. The material is soft and breathable, but the underneath (where the waterproof membrane lives) is slippery. Overall, the Coop Home Goods Ultra Tech Waterproof Mattress Protector is an excellent all-rounder with great waterproofing.

Coop Home Goods Ultra Tech Waterproof Mattress Protector: Review in brief
- Resistant to water, sweat and dust mites
- Would benefit from anchor bands for tighter fit
- Good value for money, with a risk-free trial
Coop Home Goods is a well-known bedding brand that makes mattress protectors, pillows, bed sheets and other accessories. We reviewed a full size Coop Home Goods Ultra Tech Waterproof Mattress Protector for a week, sleeping on it for seven nights and conducting repeat spill, wash and dry tests during that period. After full testing, we now recommend it as the best mattress protector of 2024 for all budgets and types of bed.
Price: $46 to $69 (MSRP)
Pocket depth: 18 inches
Waterproof: Yes
Sizes: 6 (twin to Cal king)
Warranty: One year
Trial: 100 nights
Material: Lulltra fabric (polyester, bamboo-drived viscose rayon); PU backing
Machine washable: Yes
In addition to our own in-house testing, we analyzed scores of user reviews published on Coop Home Goods, Amazon, Walmart and Target to get a sense of what customers think.
The Coop Home Goods Ultra Tech Waterproof Mattress Protector with Lulltra Fabric comes in six sizes (no crib option) and is the cheapest of two models sold by the brand. A twin costs $46, a queen is priced $59, and a king costs $69 (MSRP). These prices place it in the mid-range for waterproof mattress protectors, with comparable products costing around $60 for a queen.
We awarded the Coop Home Goods Ultra Tech Waterproof Mattress Protector an overall score of 4.5 out of 5, rating it highly for waterproof protection – it passed multiple spill tests (we use water, tea and coffee), with not a drop of liquid reaching our hybrid mattress beneath. The tea stains washed out without a trace, but on the third round of testing the coffee did leave an ever-so-light stain on the top surface of the mattress protector.
Most waterproof mattress protectors are noisy and crinkly, but the Ultra Tech Waterproof Mattress Protector is noiseless. Coop Home Goods’ Lulltra bamboo-infused fabric is also soft and breathable, so hot sleepers with night sweats will find relief sleeping on this mattress protector.
The PU backing is slippery though, so keep that in mind if you toss and turn in bed, changing sleeping positions frequently; we felt the protector move beneath us on several occasions.
For the money, the Coop Home Goods Ultra Tech Waterproof Mattress Protector is well worth the price. While darker liquids will stain the fabric, nothing penetrated the bottom side of the waterproof membrane during our tests. So we’re confident that it does its waterproofing job well. We highly recommend it if you have an existing mattress in need of better protection, as well as if you’re looking to buy the best mattress for your body and sleep needs and want to protect it properly from the start.
Coop Home Goods offers a 100-night trial, so if you change your mind you can return it for free. Shipping is also free, with most protectors delivered within five to seven business days. The Ultra Tech Waterproof Mattress Protector comes with a year’s warranty too, boosting its value for money.
Coop Home Goods Ultra Tech Waterproof Mattress Protector review: Design
- Waterproof protection
- Sweat and dust-mite resistant
- Breathable bamboo-infused fabric
The Coop Home Goods Ultra Tech Waterproof Mattress Protector is designed to offer waterproof protection for all types of mattress, but especially memory foam mattresses that are prone to soaking up sweat, body oils and other liquids compared to more breathable hybrid mattresses.
It’s designed to be sweat-resistant, dust mite-resistant, and hypoallergenic. In short, it’s a barrier between your mattress and any liquids or environmental conditions that could otherwise cause mold, mildew and odors to build up in the mattress and shorten its lifespan.
The Coop Home Goods Ultra Tech Waterproof Mattress Protector is made from a breathable fabric called Lulltra, knitted from 60% polyester and 40% bamboo-derived viscose rayon, with a 100% polyurethane backing.
All fabrics within the Ultra Tech Waterproof Mattress Protector are OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certified as free from toxic and harmful substances for safe sleeping too.
There are no anchor bands at each corner of the protector to keep it in place. Instead it slips over your mattress and mattress topper (if you have one) just like a fitted sheet, with a pocket depth of 18 inches – the maximum height this mattress protector will stretch to. That’s on the more generous end for mattress protectors, and much-needed if you sleep on a luxury mattress of around 14” tall and you have a topper.
The Coop Home Goods Ultra Tech Waterproof Mattress Protector feels soft to the touch and remains soft after repeated washing too. You can’t use fabric softener on this one, only a gentle detergent.
Coop Home Goods Ultra Tech Waterproof Mattress Protector review: Price & trial
- Priced from $46, with a queen costing $59
- Affordable compared to luxury rivals
- 100-night trial with free returns
Coop Homes Goods make two mattress protectors. The Ultra Tech Waterproof Mattress Protector is the cheaper of the two at $49 for a queen compared to $89 for the Ultra-Cool Waterproof Mattress Protector (from $69 at Coop Home Goods), designed with enhanced cooling technologies.
Rival brands at this price point include SafeRest and SureGuard. For price comparison purposes, a queen size SafeRest Waterproof Mattress Protector costs $44.99 on sale at Amazon (MSRP $69.95), with a user review score of 4.6 out of 5 (over 272,000 customer reviews).
A queen size SureGuard mattress protector costs $54.95 on sale at Amazon, with a user review score of 4.6 out of 5 (over 19,000 customer reviews). As an encasement (covers the top, bottom and sides) SureGuard’s mattress protector has the added benefit of full protection against bed bugs too.
Ultra Tech Waterproof Mattress Protector: from $46 at Coop Home Goods
You can buy this mattress protector in six different sizes at Coop Home Goods, with a one-year warranty, free shipping and a 100-night risk-free trial. It’s also sold at third party retailers including Amazon, Target and Walmart. We normally see it on sale during major holidays, with discounts of around 15-20% off. A queen size is priced $49 (MSRP), shipping within five to seven business days.
We regularly see the Good Home Coops Ultra Tech Waterproof Mattress Protector on sale, especially during major holidays and sales events such as the Labor Day mattress sales in September and the Black Friday mattress deals in November. The lowest we’ve seen a queen size drop to on Amazon is $29.99, with the highest price being $69.99 and the average being $54.
Coop Home Goods offers a 100-night ‘risk-free trial’ on the Ultra Tech Waterproof Mattress Protector. If you’re unhappy with the protector, you can return it for free (the brand will send you a pre-paid returns label). Refunds are usually issued within two business days after you have contacted the Coop Returns Team (888-316-1886 or customerservice@coopsleepgoods.com).
The brand also offers a points-based rewards system where you can earn points on each bedding purchase of $100 or more to use against future purchases. Coop Home Goods also offers a CashBack program, with monies rewarded either via Coop e-gift cards or prepaid VISA cards. There are also military and first responder discounts available.
Coop Home Goods Ultra Tech Waterproof Mattress Protector review: Performance
We reviewed a full size version of the Coop Home Goods Ultra Tech Waterproof Mattress Protector, testing it for seven consecutive days on a luxury hybrid mattress. On the eighth day we machine washed then line-dried the mattress protector following Coop Home Goods’ care guidelines.
Here’s what we discovered during our review period…
Shipping
Our Coop Home Goods Ultra Tech Waterproof Mattress Protector arrived within five business days of ordering, so we wouldn’t agree with the brand’s description of fast shipping; this is an average shipping time for bedding.
It arrived well-packaged in a tough plastic bag fitted with a handle for carrying, with little packaging for us to dispose of afterwards. The bag and cardboard insert are both recyclable.
Test score: 5 out of 5
Noise
Waterproof mattress protectors are usually designed with a PU backing and these can be noisy to sleep on; they crinkle when you lie on them. That’s a nightmare for light sleepers such as our lead tester, but the Coop Home Goods Ultra Tech Waterproof Mattress Protector is noiseless.
We slept on it in every position (stomach, back and side), rigorously and turning over and moving about on the bed during testing. The mattress protector remained quiet and we slept soundly on it night after night.
Test score: 5 out of 5
Ease of fit
Unpacking the mattress protector and fitting it to our full size hybrid mattress was a pretty easy job for one tester. That said, the waterproof backing is so slippery that the protector continued to break free of any corner we had wrapped it around while then trying to fit it to another corner.
It really would benefit from a redesign incorporating strong, elasticated anchor bands to help better secure the protector in place.
The ‘skirt’ that covers each side of the mattress is quite flowy and loose, so you’ll need to tuck it in quite a bit if you want a seamless look to your dressed bed. The positive here is that with so much skirt fabric, your mattress is properly covered, top and sides.
Test score: 4 out of 5
Slipperiness
For us, this is where the Coop Home Goods Ultra Tech Waterproof Mattress Protector falls down. The waterproof backing is very slippery – it moved around a lot while we were trying to fit the protector over our mattress, and it moved around beneath us when we were getting up or changing sleep position too.
Test score: 3 out of 5
Breathability
Our lead reviewer for the Coop Home Goods Ultra Tech Waterproof Mattress Protector is a hot sleeper and she slept fine during the testing period. The Lulltra fabric is made from a mix of naturally cooling and sweat-wicking bamboo, creating a soft-touch surface that regulates temperature well.
If you sleep very hot and feel nervous about adding another layer of fabric to your mattress, or if you sleep hot and have a memory foam mattress (prone to heat retention), then consider the Ultra-Cool Waterproof Mattress Protector instead (from $69 at Coop Home Goods).
Test score: 5 out of 5
Waterproofing
If slipperiness is where the Coop Home Goods Ultra Tech Waterproof Mattress Protector falls down, then waterproofing is where it excels. We spilled tea, coffee and water on the mattress protector after every wash and dry cycle. We did multiple cycles because we know from research that repeated washing wears away any waterproof membrane, meaning that after a while it stops absorbing moisture.
We placed a blue sponge pad and white paper towel under our spill test zones, as it’s easy to see any breakthrough liquids on these materials. Both the sponge pad and the paper towel remained bone dry during our initial tests and repeat tests.
The coffee spills did leave some light residual staining on the top of the Ultra Tech Waterproof Mattress Protector (see image), but nothing reached the mattress. We washed the protector on a cold, gentle cycle with eco-friendly detergent. Arguably a hotter washer with more chemicals would have probably lifted the coffee stain, but Coop Home Goods warns that bleach and hot washes will damage the waterproof membrane of this mattress protector.
Test score: 5 out of 5
Coop Home Goods Ultra Tech Waterproof Mattress Protector review: User reviews
- Average review rating of 4.6 out of 5 online
- Rated as good value for money versus performance
- A few customers with children say it doesn’t protect against urine
When conducting our user review research we analyzed customer ratings of the Coop Home Goods Ultra Tech Waterproof Mattress Protector at Amazon, Walmart, Target and Coop Home Goods. Overall, user reviews are positive, with an average rating of 4.6 out of 5 stars.
A large amount of customer reviews mention how quiet this waterproof mattress protector is compared to other PU-backed protectors they have slept on. Our testing experience collaborates this. They also liked that it didn’t lead to heat build up in the top of the mattress, and we discovered this during our independent review too.
Customers rate the quality of the fabric and how well it washes, with most believing it will last well due to the higher quality design. We found one user who argued the opposite, claiming that the PU backing began peeling from their mattress protector after a few washes. However they did not state whether they washed the protector on a low and cold setting as advised by Coop Home Goods; the company is clear that hot washes and hot machine drying will erode the waterproof membrane.
There were also some grips about how slippery the underneath of the Coop Goods Ultra Tech Waterproof Mattress Protector is, and again we largely agree with this. Some customers feel it would benefit from a redesign with elasticated anchor straps at each corner to better hold it in place when someone is lying upon the mattress and changing sleep positions.
A few customers who bought the Ultra Tech Waterproof Mattress Protector for their child’s bed argued that the waterproof protection does not stand up against urine, instead allowing it to leak through to the mattress beneath. We have not tested this protector with a sample of real urine, but instead conducted a series of water, tea and coffee tests to assess the level of waterproofing on offer (see Performance section above).
The average customer review ratings online are as follows:
- Coop Home Goods user rating: 4.7/5 stars (286 reviews)
- Amazon user rating: 4.4/5 stars (5,395 reviews)
- Walmart user rating: 4.5/5 stars (1,989 reviews)
- Target user rating: 4.6/5 stars (1,462 reviews)
Coop Home Goods Ultra Tech Waterproof Mattress Protector review: Cleaning & care
- Machine washable
- Tumble dry or line dry
- Not suitable for dry cleaning or ironing
The Coop Home Goods care instructions for the Ultra Tech Waterproof Mattress Protector recommend machine washing on a cold, gentle cycle. You can’t use fabric softener or bleach – just a mild detergent.
The protector can be tumbled dried on the lowest and coolest setting, or you can line-dry in good weather. Coop Home Goods will not honour the warranty on this mattress protector if you wash and dry it on high heats, as that level of heat can damage the waterproof membrane.
We recommend spot-cleaning the mattress protector first to treat any stains, before machine washing. Make sure it’s fully dry before placing it back on your mattress otherwise you could inadvertently create the perfect breeding environment for mattress mold to grow.
Coop Home Goods Ultra Tech Waterproof Mattress Protector review: Should you buy it?
If you want a mattress protector for a twin size mattress or larger with a high degree of waterproof protection, as well as dust mite resistance, then the Coop Home Goods Ultra Tech Waterproof Mattress Protector is an excellent choice for the money.
Our main gripe was that we found it to be slippery beneath the body when changing sleeping positions. Otherwise, it’s soft, breathable, and noiseless, and it’s a reasonable price too with a year’s warranty, free shipping and returns.
Buy it if…
✅ You want good waterproof protection: We subjected the mattress protector to multiple spill tests, retesting after each wash and dry cycle. No tea, coffee or water reached our absorbent paper towels or sponge pads, let alone the mattress.
✅ You want a risk-free trial period: Coop Home Goods offers a 100-night trial period with free returns (via a pre-paid returns label) and a refund within two business days. This is on a par with more expensive protectors.
✅ You like brands that offer cashback and rewards: Coop Home Goods is one of only a few bedding brands that offers rewards points and a cashback system. Military and first responder discounts available too.
Don’t buy it if…
❌ You want a non-slippery mattress protector: We felt the mattress protector move beneath us on several occasions when we were changing sleep positions. The waterproof membrane on the underneath of the protector is like an ice rink.
❌ You want full protection for tops, bottom and sides: This is not a full zippered encasement to protect against bed bugs. If you need the highest level of protection, see the SureGuard Mattress Encasement below.
❌ You need a crib size mattress protector: Coop Home Goods doesn’t make this mattress protectors for cribs. Instead it has a Crib Fitted Sheet from $29, which is quick-drying but not waterproof.

2. SafeRest Waterproof Mattress Protector: from $18.99 on sale at Amazon
This is the second-best selling water-resistant (not waterproof) mattress protector on Amazon, with three versions available: Classic (polyester), from $18.99, Original (cotton terry), from $21.75, and Sleepure (bamboo viscose), from $32.20.
