What mattresses do hotels use? The Ritz, Hilton, Premier Inn and more
Learn which mattresses some of the world's top hotels use – and how to buy them for yourself
Want to recreate the comfy and plush vacation atmosphere in your bedroom year-round? Then you're in the right place. In this guide you’ll find all the best hotel mattresses from the likes of the Hilton, Ritz-Carlton, Westin and others, available for purchase for your home.
As a professional mattress tester, I regularly review the very best mattresses for all types of sleepers. Some of them remind me of the beds I've slept on at some of the world's finest hotels, but there's nothing like the real thing for creating that quintessential hotel experience at home. Like many of us, I've often found that the best sleep of my life has come while staying in a hotel.
I’ve researched the different types of hybrid, cooling and memory foam mattresses used in the world's most-popular hotels, from the opulent Ritz-Carlton to the budget Premier Inn. The good news is you can buy many of these luxury mattresses directly from your favorite chains, and for the full hotel experience, you can often add the bedding to match.
Hotel bedding and mattresses are usually of exceptional quality, which also means that they tend to cost more than your typical mattress in a box. So to help you out, I'm also sharing my top pick affordable alternatives to hotel mattresses – plus some expert advice on how to shop the mattress sales and save money on the best hotel pillows and mattresses. Ready to turn your bedroom into a 5-star suite? Then let's explore what mattresses hotels use...
What guests sleep on at the world's top hotels
What mattress does the Marriott hotel use?
The Marriott Bed is a 9" mattress made with soy-based foam, designed to cradle your body without creating that sinking feeling that some people dislike. There's also a taller 13" innerspring model with reinforced edges for more support, and we'd recommend that taller model if you like to sprawl out starfish style in your sleep.
The Marriott Hotel works with established brands like Jamison and Serta Simmons to produce its exclusive mattresses. They are supremely comfy.
Plop onto a Marriott Bed and your head will land on one of its plush Marriott Pillows. This guest favorite has breathable Lyocell fibers intertwined with down for a cool, restful night's sleep. Meanwhile, its Signature Sheets are made from a cotton blend with a 300-thread count for a crisp, clean feel.

Shop the Marriott Bed Foam Mattress at Shop Marriott
Found at Marriott Hotel properties worldwide, this high-density soy-based foam mattress has a medium to medium-firm feel without the sink of softer memory foam mattresses. A queen retails from $1,995 (minus a box spring), and sales are rare, but you might get lucky if you shop around the major holidays – we spotted $350 off the queen size this Memorial Day.
The affordable alternative: Cocoon by Sealy Chill mattress
The Cocoon by Sealy Chill is an all-foam mattress with a difference. Instead of a warm and soft foam 'hug', this specialist temperature regulating bed has a cooling surface with a firmer feel that allows you to move around easily. It's surprisingly affordable for a cooling mattress, with the evergreen 35% off sale taking a queen down to $699 – and you'll get a sleep bundle included. Learn more with our Cocoon by Sealy Chill mattress review.
What mattress does The Westin Hotel use?
The Heavenly Bed, made for The Westin by Simmons, has been a staple for the hotel chain since 1999. Its cushy pillow-top construction provides ample support so guests wake up refreshed and ready for the day ahead.
Often found atop the popular Heavenly Bed are several pillows exclusive to The Westin. Among them are the classic Feather & Down Pillow suited for all types of sleepers, and the hypoallergenic Down Alternative Pillow that's just as cozy. These extra touches are good way to make your mattress feel like a 5-star hotel bed.
If you're keen to bring The Westin Heavenly Bed to your bedroom, you can find it at the Westin Store along with pillows, linens, and other accouterments to enhance your at-home sleep experience. Want to learn more? Head across to our guide to what mattress does the Westin uses for a deep-dive into how the Heavenly Bed was created, and what makes it so comfortable.
What I thought: After years of very limited travel due to the pandemic, I recently reacquainted myself with the soft yet supportive Heavenly Bed. Whether I was on my side or stomach, I was perfectly comfortable and the fluffy pillows were a nice complement, too. The small vial of lavender and chamomile oil placed bedside by the hotel added a calming touch. My only complaint is that I was only a guest at the Westin for one night, so my time with the Heavenly Bed was way too limited.
Shop the Westin Heavenly Bed at Westin Store
This innerspring mattress is as plush as it is supportive. On top is a cushioned pillow top that'll comfortably lull you to sleep, and beneath is a layer of springs for superior pressure relief. Reinforced edges will make it easy to get in or out of bed while preventing premature sagging in the middle. Westin sales are infrequent, but savings do appear on occasion, particularly around the big sales days.
The affordable alternative: The WinkBed mattress
Take a trip to The Time Hotel in New York or the Boon Hotel in California and you'll find yourself sleeping on the WinkBed, our affordable alternative to the Westin Heavenly Bed. There's plenty of strong edge support, to avoid rolling off in the night, plus you can pick between four firmness levels (for the closest Heavenly Bed mimic, choose Luxury Firm). WinkBed typically knocks $300 off its MSRP – bringing the price of a queen to $1,499. Read our WinkBed mattress review to learn more.
What mattress does The Ritz-Carlton use?
Custom-made for the hotel chain by luxury brand Stearns & Foster, the 13-inch Ritz-Carlton Bed is a hybrid with a plush pillow top, reinforced foam-cased edges, and breathable foam layers combined with individually-wrapped coils so hot sleepers won't have to fuss with the thermostat at night.
The Ritz-Carlton's signature bedding is just as luxurious. The renowned Ritz-Carlton Pillow contains a blend of down, duck feathers, and Lyocell fibers, with a triple-chamber cotton cover to keep it fluffy and full. If you're vegan, there's also a Down Alternative version with eco-friendly fill crafted from recycled bottles.
Transform your bedroom into a 5-star hotel by visiting the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Shop, where you can purchase its famous pillows, beds, linens, and more. To learn more about recreating the luxury Ritz-Carlton experience at home, check out our guide exploring what mattress the Ritz-Carlton hotel uses.
Shop The Ritz-Carlton Bed at The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Shop
Exclusively designed for the Ritz-Carlton by luxury sleep brand Stearns & Foster, the Ritz-Carlton Bed offers a sumptuous sleep experience. Crafted to be cooling, supportive, and comfortable, breathable foam layers keep temperatures under control while reinforced edges make it easier to get in and out of the 13.5-inch bed. It's a premium bed with a premium price tag, but keep an eye out for sales which run from time to time and can knock a significant amount off your purchase.
The affordable alternative: Brooklyn Aurora Luxe mattress
The Ritz-Carlton Bed promises a cooler sleep experience, but we don't think you'll wake up sweating with the Brooklyn Aurora Luxe mattress alternative. In our Brooklyn Aurora Luxe mattress review, we found the gel-infused foam plus phase-changing copper-infused foam layers work wonders to draw away heat. At 13-inches tall, it offers a similar sumptuous depth to the Ritz-Carlton Bed, and you can choose between three firmness levels. Even better, Brooklyn Bedding runs consistent year-round sales, making the Aurora Luxe more than $1,200 cheaper than the Ritz-Carlton Bed.
What mattress does the Novotel use?
Every Novotel property features the chain's unique Live N Dream mattress, a 9-inch hybrid of foam and double-pocket micro-springs. According to the hotel, this mattress is designed to provide 'universal yet personalized comfort' for travelers of all stripes.
The Live N Dream mattress is dressed in 100% percale sheets plus a cotton-poly blend duvet. Additionally, guests have the choice between Novotel's standard Sleeping Pillow (filled with fibers derived from 100% recycled bottles) and a dual-sided Smart Pillow that can be folded to suit one's comfort.
Purchase Novotel's signature mattresses and bedding from the Novotel Store. Note that prices are listed in Euros since Novotel Store is based in France. Shipping is available outside of the European Union, but you'll need to do the conversions yourself upon purchase. You'll also be on the hook for shipping fees, along with any relevant duties or taxes.
What I thought: I reveled in the supportive comfort of the Live N Dream bed for three nights at the Novotel Toronto. After long days of sightseeing and plenty of walking, I greatly benefitted from this bed's excellent pressure relief along my knees and hips, but not at the expense of proper alignment. I regularly deal with back pain but every morning I woke up with barely any discomfort and found it a welcome reprieve from my unyielding mattress back home. Meanwhile, the softer side of the Smart Pillow nicely complemented the medium-firm feel of the Live N Dream, and Novotel's bedding setup as a whole kept me cozy without overheating.
Shop the Novotel Live N Dream Mattress at Novotel Store
Micro pocket springs and memory foam make up this 9-inch hybrid mattress. This allows it to conform to your body type and sleep style for personalized support and pressure relief. Novotel is based in France so prices are strictly in Euros. A queen goes for €1,440, which is approximately $1,550 / £1,210 at the time of this listing. Shipping fees and taxes will apply to customers outside of the EU. However, occasional 25% off sales take a generous discount off the original cost, softening the blow of the shipping fees.
The affordable alternative: Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid mattress
The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid has a similar price tag to the Novotel bed, sitting in the upper-mid range price bracket. However, as a US-based brand, you avoid the shipping and delivery fees, making this a cost-effective alternative. (And as Saatva offers free white glove delivery, it's also a much simpler, more accessible switch.) An incredibly comfortable bed, this Saatva Hybrid has a feel that suits a wide range of sleepers as well exceptional pressure relief. Learn more in our Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid mattress review.
What mattress does the Sofitel use?
French hotel chain Sofitel believes the bedroom should be 'a private haven to indulge, unwind, read and refresh.' That's reflected in the design of its Sofitel Bed, a medium-firm mattress with a soft top layer and an ergonomic design for optimal pressure relief. It also promises superb motion isolation, which is great for couples.
Guests of the Sofitel rest their heads on the plush Sofitel Feather & Down Pillow, which is finished with a cotton cover that's double-stitched so it remains full and plush. A down alternative version substitutes feathers for microfibers.
All of Sofitel's mattresses and pillows are unique to the hotel chain. Those who want to experience a bonne nuit every night can shop at the Sofitel Boutique.
Shop the Sofitel Mattress at Sofitel Boutique
Sofitel's exclusive mattress is designed to offer full-body support and reinforced edges so no matter where or how you lay, you're always comfortable. For the full Sofitel experience, add a plush Featherbed mattress topper, which brings a layer of softness to the medium-firm bed. A queen mattress retails for $1,899, but Sofitel does run rare sales, so keep an eye out for a discount.
The affordable alternative: The DreamCloud Mattress
The DreamCloud has an MSRP of $1,332 for a queen but an evergreen sale means you never have to pay that much. The current up to 50% off sale has been running for a while, taking a queen down to just $665 – that's almost $1,000 cheaper than the Sofitel bed. In our DreamCloud mattress review, we described it as the "best value luxury hybrid" and noted it was a particularly good choice for couples and those with back pain. It also has a high ranking in our best hybrid mattress guide, fighting off some stiff competition.
What mattress does the Premier Inn use?
The UK's largest hotel chain teamed up with Silentnight to revamp its Premier Inn Mattress. It still has a medium-firm feel and a layer of 1,000 individually-wrapped pocket springs, but now there's also a removable, moisture-wicking lightweight cover and a GelTex foam layer for optimal pressure relief and airflow.
Make sure to add a couple of Premier Inn Luxury Pillows. They contain a contouring microfiber fill with a quilted cotton-polyester protector. Guests can choose either a soft or firm feel, whichever is best suited to their sleep style.
Premier Inn bedding can be purchased directly from the chain. Premier Inn pillows went viral on viral on TikTok in 2021 for their comfort and affordability – a pair only cost £30 at the time. (That price has risen to £36 for two pillows, which is still a great value.)
Shop the Premier Inn Mattress at Premier Inn
Created in partnership with popular sleep brand Silentnight, the Premier Inn Mattress 2.0 has been carefully crafted and rigorously tested to provide a next-level sleep experience. Emphasizing temperature regulation, the Premier Inn Mattress features breathable foams and a supportive pocket spring system. There's also a removable mattress topper, which can be rotated by one person. Sales are rare, but it's among the most affordable hotel beds even at full price – a double has an RRP of £679.
The affordable alternative: Silentnight Just Bliss mattress
From the same brand as the Premier Inn Mattress 2.0, the Silentnight Just Bliss is a gel hybrid mattress with a responsive feel and impressive pressure relief. Like the Premier Inn Mattress, the Just Bliss is also designed to banish night sweats for a cooler sleep experience. Prices start at £480 for a single, and you get a full year mattress trial to test it at home.
What mattress does the Four Seasons use?
The prestigious Four Seasons revolutionized the hospitality industry in 2014 by allowing guests to choose the firmness of their mattresses. Its Signature Mattress is available in firm, plush, or a mix of both. Layers of temperature-regulating memory foam plus pocketed coil springs will ensure you're adequately supported without overheating, making it a good cooling mattress for hot sleepers.
Adding to that comfort is the Four Seasons Down & Feather Pillow. It consists of a white down and feather blend on the inside plus a 240-thread-count cotton case on the outside.
Shoppers can browse the Four Seasons at Home storefront for its exclusive Signature Home Collection, which also includes linens and duvets. Learn more about what makes the Signature Mattress so comfortable in our guide to what mattress the Four Seasons hotel uses.

The Signature Plush version adds a layer of soft AirFeel foam while the Signature Firm version includes a dual layer of AirCool Foam. No matter which one you choose, a queen will set you back $3,750.
The affordable alternative: Saatva Classic Mattress
The Saatva Classic is one of our favorite mattresses, and in our Saatva Classic Mattress review, we praise it for bringing 'hotel luxury' to your home. Like the Four Seasons Signature mattress, you can choose between three firmness options. You can also pick your height – the Classic is available in 11.5 inches or 14.5 inches. As well as a hotel-quality feel, you'll also get resort-style extras, including a 365-night trial and free in-home delivery. With frequent Saatva mattress sales, you'll seldom have to pay the list price.
What mattress do Hilton Hotels use?
Stay at any Hilton Hotel and you'll find its custom-designed Hilton Bed, made in partnership with Serta. It's designed to last for years thanks to extra coil support plus an internal design that prevents sagging. The plush top is meant to improve circulation so you sleep soundly and comfortably throughout the night.
Complementing that is the Hilton Feather & Down Pillow, which has an Inner chamber of feathers with an outer chamber of down. If you prefer a denser feel without the use of animal products, there's the Hilton Down Alternative Pillow. The Hilton Down Pillow is the plushest of the bunch.
Feel like you're sleeping at a Hilton Hotel every night and browse Hilton to Home for your new mattress, pillows, or bed linens. Want to know more about Hilton mattress? Take a look at our guide 'what mattress does the Hilton hotel use?'
Shop the Hilton Mattress at Hilton to Home
This luxury innerspring mattress boasts extra coil support plus reinforced edges to prevent sagging. It also promises maximum motion absorption so couples won't have to worry about disturbing their partner (or being disturbed themselves). A queen retails for $1,645, making it the least expensive hotel mattress on this list after Premier Inn – and occasional Hilton sales reduce it even further.
The affordable alternative: Serta Perfect Sleeper mattress
Serta manufactures the Hilton Mattress, and we recommend sticking with the brand for a similar feel. The Serta Perfect Sleeper features a custom coil support system for soothing pressure relief, while a plush top layer adds cushioning. You can personalize the feel thanks to three support levels and a range of firmness options, for perfectly-tailored sleep. For a finish similar to the Hilton Mattress, try the Perfect Sleeper with the Ultimate support level and a Medium Pillow Top feel – a queen retails for $999.
What mattress does Kimpton use?
All Kimpton hotels include a mattress custom-made for this international chain by Sealy. Whether you stay at the Palomar, Hotel Monaco, or any of Kimpton's other properties you'll be resting on a 13-inch innerspring with gel-infused foam layers, an extra-deep plush top, and pressure-relief inlays to support your lumbar and legs. A cooling antimicrobial cover keeps night sweats and allergens at bay.
Additionally, Kimpton pillows come in various options: feather & down, synthetic fiber down alternative, or down alternative gel. These pillows maintain their plushness with a 100% cotton pillow protector that keeps the fill from shifting too much.
Visit the Kimpton Style store if you want to recreate the Kimpton experience at home. Shop mattresses, bedding, linens, and pillows.
Shop the Kimpton Bed at Kimpton Style
If you struggle with back pain, the Kimpton Bed should provide you with much relief through inlays along the lumbar and legs. A box spring isn't needed, either, provided you have a platform bed. A queen retails for $1,795; you can also opt for a split queen for the same price, which isn't typically offered by most mattress brands.
The affordable alternative: Bear Star Hybrid mattress
The Bear Star Hybrid mattress is for anyone who wants pressure relief to ease aches and pains. The premium pillow top provides a luxurious finish, while multiple foam layers and individually-wrapped coils add support. The queen size has an MSRP of $1,998, but frequent sales mean you never have to pay that much. Expect a queen to sell for around $1,299, and you might even get bedding thrown in for free.
What mattress does W Hotels use?
There are two luxurious mattresses to choose between at the W Hotel store: the Plush Top Mattress and the Pillow Top Mattress. Both are innersprings with a cushioned surface, but it's the difference in comfort layers that will determine the kind of sleep experience you have on a W Hotel bed.
For side and back sleepers, the best choice is the W Hotel Pillow Top mattress – described by some guests as like "sleeping on a cloud" (according to W Hotel, at least). A quilted pillow top finish provides this mattress with cushioned pressure relief that's ideal for side sleepers, while the pocketed coils beneath reduce motion isolation and increase edge support.
With a firmer feel, the W Hotel Plush Top Mattress is better suited to stomach sleepers, plus back sleepers who prefer a sturdy support. Like the Pillow Top Mattress, the Plush Top contains a sturdy innerspring layer, reinforced at the perimeter to lessen sag. The plush finish adds a touch of softness to help limit tossing and turning, but if you're after a cushioned feel, W Hotels recommends adding a featherbed.
Whichever mattress catches your eye, you can find both for sale at W Hotels The Store, alongside accessories to complete your luxurious sleep setup.
Shop the W Hotels Mattress at W Hotels The Store
Tall, luxurious, and with two different feels to choose from, the W Hotels Mattress is an innerspring with either the cushioned pressure relief of the quilted pillow top finish or the subtle contouring of the plush top finish. There is a premium price tag, but occasional 20% off sales can help you save.
The affordable alternative: Helix Midnight Mattress
The Helix Midnight provides soft cushioning for side sleepers supported by a sturdy coil layer with excellent motion isolation, making it a good, affordable alternative to the W Hotels Pillow Top Mattress. In our Helix Midnight Mattress review, we were impressed with just how well this mattress cushioned the pressure points for side sleepers, and an evergreen 20% off sale can help you save more.
Hotel mattress and bedding FAQ
What firmness are hotel mattresses?
Hotels know that the best chance of getting guests to return is by offering them a comfy bed to sleep in, which is why most hotel mattresses opt for a medium-firm feel. Medium-firm mattresses offer a superb balance of comfort and support, and all leading mattress brands make medium-firm beds.
Many of these brands supply hotels with mattresses, so chances are the mattress you’ll be sleeping on in your next hotel visit will be a medium-firm bed. Any hotel mattress worth its salt will also deliver good pressure relief, motion isolation and edge support so that you can get in and out of bed easier.
If the mattress at your hotel is too firm or too soft, ask reception or concierge for a mattress topper to change the feel of the bed to your liking.
Why are hotel beds so comfortable?
Hotels understand that weary guests are going to want to stay somewhere they can fully rest and recharge after a long day of traveling or exploring. Thus, all hotels – from budget chains to 5-star properties – invest plenty of research and money in creating the best sleep experience for their customers. That includes using premium materials that'll last for hundreds (if not thousands) of stays.
Some of that comfort may also be psychological. Think about it – you enter your hotel room where the sheets are fresh, the lights are dimmed and the room temperature has a very slight chill. Combine that with overwhelming sense of exhaustion and you'll drift to sleep as soon as your head hits the pillow.
Still, if you can't get that lush feeling of a certain hotel's bed out of your mind you can replicate as much of that experience as possible in your own home by purchasing pillows and mattresses exclusive to your favorite property. However, if that's cost-prohibitive, start small and pick up one of the best mattress toppers for a cost-effective way to immediately upgrade your sleep.
Do hotel mattresses need a box spring?
Hotels use innerspring mattresses for the most part, so they're often paired with a box spring. This helps absorb shock and keeps the mattress in good shape. A box spring also makes a bed look comfier and more inviting since it adds plenty of height.
When buying a mattress directly from a hotel, it'll be paired with a box spring by default; however, you can choose to purchase a mattress on its own if you neither need nor want a box spring. Some hotel mattresses may not necessarily require a box spring, either, provided you have a platform bed – but it's best to read the fine print before deciding to go without.
Can I find deals on hotel mattresses and pillows?
Most hotels use luxury mattresses and pillows in their rooms and suites. Thus, they won't be among the cheapest you'll find. Fortunately, you can manage to save some cash on hotel-exclusive bedding if you're patient enough to wait for sales.
Alternatively, if you're part of a hotel's loyalty program, you might be able to purchase bedding and mattresses with reward points. If you've accumulated a robust balance, you can essentially bring home your hotel mattress for free (or very cheap).
Another way to save on hotel mattresses is to find a dupe for much less. Brands like Saatva and WinkBed are renowned for their hotel-quality builds. Not to mention, many of these brands offer generous at-home trial periods, free delivery, and extensive warranties – perks you may not enjoy when buying a mattress straight from a hotel.
