Norwich City comfortably claimed the Championship trophy last year, but the scars of the club's most recent abysmal top-flight campaign are still relatively fresh. Losing talisman winger Emi Buendia early in the summer to Aston Villa has only added to the worries of the Norwich faithful.
If Norwich are to avoid going straight back down then forward Teemu Pukki will need to be in top goalscoring form. He netted 11 EPL goals in the 2019/20 season, and will be looking to better this time. Expect midfielder Todd Cantwell to pull the strings in the middle of the park, having overcome a late injury to make the starting team.
While certainly among the favorites for the drop, Norwich won't give up without a fight. The thrifty club has multiple new additions including USA striker Josh Sargent, winger Christos Tzolis, Chelsea-loanee Billy Gilmour and goalkeeper Angus Gunn, who has returned to his boyhood club after a successful loan spell three years ago. Gilmour is the only one of that quartet to start, with the others all among the substitutes.
For Liverpool, it's more of the case of who's back rather than who's new. After nine months on the sideline following injury, Virgil Van Dijk starts in the heart of the defense; his presence was sorely missed last season.
After suffering a defensive crisis brought on by multiple injuries last season, Liverpool have signed highly rated centre-back Ibrahima Konaté from Bundesliga club RB Leipzig to give them much-need squad depth; he's on the bench here. There haven't been any attacking acquisitions, but when you have Sadio Mané and Mohamed Salah leading the line, you don't really need extra firepower.
By their own high standards, Liverpool had a poor season last year. They will be desperate to mount a proper title challenge in 2021-22, and will face Norwich with confidence they can do some serious damage.
