After dropping two sets to compatriot Laslo Djere in the third round, Djokovic has breezed through to a 36th Grand Slam final. The second seed swatted aside young American Ben Shelton in straight sets in Friday’s semi-final, once again proving that, even at 36, he is still at the very peak of his powers.
The Serbian has been virtually untouchable this year, winning the Australian Open and French Open before being edged out by Carlos Alcaraz in a five-set thriller at Wimbledon. Even after that agonizing defeat, Djokovic bounced back at the Cincinnati Masters with revenge on the Spaniard after a hard-fought victory.
Now Djokovic will have the opportunity to avenge another painful loss as it was Medvedev who beat him in straight sets in the 2021 final at Flushing Meadows. The Russian has always been a threat on hard courts and was sensational as he got the better of top seed Alcaraz in the semi-finals.
"I said I needed to play 11 out of 10 against Carlos. I played 12 out of 10,” Medvedev said after his victory. The 27-year-old will hope he can reach the same heights against Djokovic, who he also beat earlier this year in Dubai, when he plays in his fifth Grand Slam final and third in New York.
