Tom's Guide Verdict

We tested the Utopia Bedding Bamboo Viscose Waterproof Mattress Protector, sleeping on it for three weeks and conducting spill, wash and dry tests. During this time, we found it to be completely waterproof, noiseless and breathable. While we didn't find it the easiest mattress protector to sleep on or fit because of the slipperiness, for an incredibly budget-friendly price ($20.99 for a queen) this protector performs very well, offering full protection from sweat, spills and stains. Overall, this is a good option for hot sleepers on a budget.

Utopia Bedding Waterproof Bamboo Mattress Protector Review: Review in brief

Utopia is a budget bedding brand found on Amazon. It sells everything bedroom related, from blackout curtains and body pillows to sheet sets and mattress protectors and encasements.

We reviewed a queen size Utopia Bedding Waterproof Bamboo Viscose Mattress Protector for three weeks while conducting spill, wash and dry tests.

After testing, we recommend it as one of the best mattress protectors of the year, thanks to its low cost and effective waterproofing. To inform this decision, we also considered user reviews on Amazon, as well as our own in-house testing, to ensure our experience aligns with other customers.

The Utopia Bedding Waterproof Bamboo Viscose Mattress Protector is an impressive budget option from the brand and it comes in 5 different sizes, with a twin costing $16.99, a queen costing $20.99 and a king costing $21.99.

Overall, we rated this mattress protector as a 3.5/5 which is a decent score for such a budget friendly option. We were impressed with how waterproof this mattress protector was, with no liquid reaching the mattress even after repeat washing.

This means if you've invested in the best mattress for your sleep needs, you can rest assured it will be fully protected from sweat, spills and stains with this protector.

Alongside this, the mattress protector was super soft with a little padding for extra comfort, and it was quiet. Some waterproof mattress protectors can rustle like a plastic sheet when you toss and turn during the night.

However, the Utopia Bedding Bamboo Mattress Protector was very quiet, helping our testers enjoy a restful sleep free from disturbances.

Because of the bamboo viscose, we also found this mattress protector to be breathable as well as moisture wicking, making it a good choice for hot sleepers who are reluctant to add another layer to their bed that could trap more heat.

For the waterproof protection at a budget-friendly price, it’s definitely worth it

This mattress protector didn’t receive 5 stars because we found the design and the slipperiness of the material made it quite difficult to fit onto our mattress, and almost every morning we had to refit it because it moved around a lot in the night.

However, for the budget-friendly price, it’s definitely worth it. Our repeated tests showed no liquid penetrated the waterproof membrane, keeping our mattress clean and stain free. Despite multiple coffee spills to test this, the mattress protector came out of the wash stain free, which is also a big bonus.

Utopia Bedding Waterproof Bamboo Mattress Protector Review: Design

  • Waterproof material
  • Breathable and moisture wicking bamboo fabric
  • Sweat resistant

The Utopia Bedding Bamboo Viscose Mattress Protector offers waterproof protection to all types of mattresses, especially those with a deep profile, thanks to its 15” pocket depth (a queen stretches to 17”.)

This is particularly useful for memory foam mattresses which can be damaged easily by exposure to excess fluid, but it also works with all mattresses, including innersprings and hybrid mattresses.

The protector is made from 80% polyester and 20% bamboo viscose material, which makes it breathable and moisture wicking, as well as waterproof.

All materials used are OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certified and Climate Pledge
Friendly certified, which is why it earns it’s spot as the best eco-friendly option in our mattress protector guide.

OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 means there are no harmful chemicals used in this protector, making it safe for the environment and anyone who sleeps on it.

Only the top of the mattress protector has the waterproof design. The edges that wrap around and underneath the mattress are made from an elasticated material that stretches around the mattress to keep it in place.

This means there are no anchor bands to keep it in place, instead, it acts as a fitted bed sheet would.

These edges have a super soft feel and the top made from the waterproof material also feels soft. You can pop this mattress in the washing machine , as long as it’s on a cool, gentle cycle and you avoid fabric softener and use a gentle detergent. You can also tumble dry it on a low heat, making maintenance easy.

Utopia Bedding Waterproof Bamboo Mattress Protector Review: Price and trial

  • Prices from $13.99, with a queen currently costing $16.99
  • A great budget option
  • No trial but a 30-day returns policy

The Utopia Bedding Bamboo Viscose Mattress Protector we tested has an MSRP of $20.99 for a queen, which is definitely in the affordable/budget price range. However, it's currently on sale with 19% off, bringing this price down to $16.99.

Utopia Bedding makes a range of different mattress protectors and encasements, including their Waterproof 5-Sided Mattress Protector, which has an MSRP of $12.99 for a queen.

Meanwhile the Waterproof Mattress Protector with Terry Top is $18.99 for a queen size (though most other sizes are currently on sale), and their Waterproof Zippered Encasement is $23.99 for a queen. This means the Bamboo Viscose Mattress Protector sits in the middle range of this brand’s models.

Other competitors offering a similar product are priced significantly higher, with the Coop Home Goods Ultra Tech Waterproof Mattress Protector starting at $67.83 for a twin at Amazon (queen-size is currently unavailable), and the SafeRest Waterproof Mattress Protector at $38.99 for a queen at Amazon.

For reference, the SafeRest Mattress Protector has a user rating of 4.6 from over 279,000 reviews and the Utopia Bedding Bamboo Viscose Mattress Protector has the same 4.6 rating from over 54,000 reviews.

Utopia Bedding Waterproof Bamboo Mattress Protectofrom $13.99 at Amazon

Utopia Bedding Waterproof Bamboo Mattress Protector: from $13.99 at Amazon
You can buy this mattress protector in 5 different sizes, starting at $16.99 for a twin, though a twin XL is currently reduced to $13.99 (was $17.99). You won’t get a long sleep trial like some more luxury retailers, but you’ll benefit from Amazon’s fast free shipping and 30-day returns period. Right now, a queen is reduced to a budget friendly $16.99 (was $20.99) but Utopia Bedding do hold regular sales, often 33% off, so it's possible you'll see an even better price for this product later in the year.

While this mattress protector is currently on sale, we have seen previous discounts of up to 33% off during mattress sales like the Labor Day mattress sales and the Black Friday mattress sales.

However, since then, the MSRPs have increased. A queen size used to cost $14.99, with sales reducing it to just $9.99. However, the MSRP has increased to $20.99, which means we expect the 33% off sale price to be around $14.

As this is only sold through the third party retailer of Amazon, you can expect returns and shipping to be easy and simple, but you won’t get the 100-night sleep trial many other competitors, like Coop Home Goods, offer.

Utopia Bedding Waterproof Bamboo Mattress Protector Review: Performance

Shipping

As Utopia Bedding is shipped using Amazon, it was fast and reliable, arriving within just a few days of ordering. If you have Prime membership, you can expect this to arrive the day after ordering.

This mattress protector arrived in a clear hard plastic carry bag with handles, which kept it protected and nicely contained. There was also minimal waste to dispose of.

Test score: 5 out of 5

Noise

It’s common for waterproof mattress protectors to have a loud crinkling sound when you move them, and while we were initially worried this would be case as we could hear this sound when fitting the protector the mattress, when the bed was fully made, it was not noticeable.

The lead tester and her partner both move around a fair bit in their sleep, being combination sleepers, and neither of them reported hearing any noise during the night.

Test score: 5 out of 5

Ease of fit

(Image credit: Future / Tom's Guide)

While fitting the protector onto the mattress was easy enough, with the elasticated sides easily stretching around the bed and underneath, because of how silky and soft the material was, it moved around a lot.

It was also nearly impossible to keep it flat against the mattress, with the material bunching and wrinkling across the mattress.

This meant that while our tester fitted one corner, it easily slipped loose at another corner, refusing to stay in place. Even when the whole mattress protector was fitted in place, it came loose nearly every night of testing.

We definitely think this protector would benefit from robust anchor bands to keep it in place.

Test score: 2 out of 5

Slipperiness

The waterproof lining of this mattress protector is incredibly slippy, which means it was constantly moving around over the mattress.

This meant whenever our testers turned or changed position at night, it would move beneath them, which is why, by the morning, the protector had not only come loose, but also displaced the fitted bed sheet that was on top of it.

Having to remake the whole bed every morning became a bug bear for both our lead tester and her partner.

Test score: 2 out of 5

Breathability

The moisture-wicking, breathable bamboo meant that this mattress protector didn’t trap heat. A main factor in this mattress protector’s breathability is the material that makes up the sides of the product.

The elastic is extremely thin and has tiny holes in it, meaning there is plenty of airflow allowed through the protector and to the mattress.

Despite this, our testers still occasionally slept hot, although they were sleeping on a dense memory foam mattress that has the tendency to trap heat.

Test score: 4 out of 5

Waterproofing

Waterproofing is where this budget mattress protector really shines. For such a low price, our testers did not anticipate just how effective the barrier this protector created between them and any spills and their mattress would be.

Just in case, our tester placed an absorbent paper towel beneath the protector before spilling coffee onto the surface. After the coffee had spilled, we removed the mattress protector and the absorbent towel was bone dry, and so was the mattress.

(Image credit: Future / Tom's Guide)

We then put the mattress protector in the wash, following the easy care instructions. This means a low-heat wash (we chose a 20 degree, gentle wash to be safe) and a low-heat tumble dry.

With the washer/dryer we used, it’s hard to choose the temperature of a drying cycle, so we took it out of the dryer after just 15 minutes and hung it out to dry for the rest of the time.

When we retested the protector, after it had fully dried, it was just as absorbent and waterproof as the first time. We repeated this process a couple of times and the waterproofing abilities never changed.

Plus, the coffee stain always came out using just a simple detergent, which is a real bonus!

However, it’s worth mentioning that because the sides of the mattress protector aren’t waterproof, if you spill anything on the edges of your bed, it’s likely to seep through very quickly to your mattress, staining it.

We spilled a small amount of tea accidentally and because the protector had shifted positions, the mattress was not protected in one area.

Thankfully, we were able to clean the surface of the mattress almost instantly so no stain was left, but it’s worth being weary of. If you're worried, consider a mattress encasement instead.

Test score: 5 out of 5

Utopia Bedding Waterproof Bamboo Mattress Protector review: user reviews

  • Rated 4.6 out of 5 by users on Amazon
  • Customers like the breathability and softness of the protector
  • Some users complain of long dry times and slipperiness

We analyzed the vast amount of reviews of this mattress protector on Amazon to find out how customers felt about the product and its abilities to keep their mattress clean and dry.

Overall, from over 54,000 user reviews, the protector averages a 4.6 star rating, which is pretty impressive. Many users praised the softness of the mattress, enjoying that the slight padding at the top of the protector felt comfortable as well as high quality.

Although a common theme in the reviews was the fact that you can see the bamboo pattern through the bedsheets, most customers weren’t too bothered by this, saying it was a small price to pay for an excellent product.

Many customers reported expecting a hot, sweaty sleep like other waterproof mattress protectors can create, but they were pleasantly surprised by how breathable and moisture wicking the bamboo was.

Another point that was commonly praised was how cool this mattress protector is. Many customers reported expecting a hot, sweaty sleep like other waterproof mattress protectors can create, but they were pleasantly surprised by how breathable and moisture wicking the bamboo was.

Alongside this, users expected some noise but were pleased with how quiet the protector was.

However, a frequent gripe amongst customers, which we agree with after testing the protector, is that it doesn't dry quickly after washing it. Because the waterproofing is so effective, it takes a long time to dry.

While you can tumble dry it on a low heat, some customers reported even this wouldn’t dry it, and said they noticed puddles of water still on the protector when they took it out of the machine.

Similar to what we found when testing, a few customers also found the slippery back frustrating to put on the mattress and keep in place. However, the majority of users say these minor flaws are worth it for the quality of the waterproofing, the comfort and quiet this protector offers for such a budget-friendly price.

Utopia Bedding Waterproof Bamboo Mattress Protector review: Cleaning and care

  • Machine washable on low heat
  • Tumble dry on low heat or dry flat
  • Not suitable for dry cleaning or ironing

(Image credit: Future / Tom's Guide)

While you can throw this mattress protector in the washing machine which makes it super easy to care for, you’ll need to ensure you wash the protector on a cold, gentle cycle with only gentle detergent and no fabric softener or bleach.

You can also tumble dry the mattress as long as it’s on a gentle setting and the lowest heat. Alternatively, you can dry the protector flat.

However, because of the waterproof backing, it does take a very long time to fully dry, and you’ll need to ensure it’s bone dry before putting it on your mattress. Especially if you have a memory foam mattress, as any remaining moisture can lead to mattress mold.

Utopia Bedding Waterproof Bamboo Mattress Protector review: Should you buy it?

If you want a quiet, soft and quality waterproof mattress protector on a budget, then the Utopia Bamboo Viscose Mattress Protector is a good option.

While we found the process of fitting it and the slipperiness meant that making the bed was a tricky task, many other customers found the fit to be great and didn’t report any movement, so this may depend on the type of mattress you have.

While you won’t get a sleep trial and a warranty like some more premium mattress protector brands, you will get a 30-day returns period from Amazon. For the price, you can’t go too far wrong with this protector.
