Helix Midnight vs Helix Midnight Luxe: Which mattress in a box should you buy in the extended Presidents' Day sales?

How does the Helix Midnight compare to the upgraded Helix Midnight Luxe? Both mattresses have 27% off in the Presidents’ Day mattress sales with our exclusive discount code TOMS27, but if you aren’t sure whether it’s worth spending the extra on the more expensive Luxe, this guide is for you. Here, we'll look at how the Helix Midnight vs Helix Midnight Luxe match up when it comes to performance, value for money, comfort and support and temperature regulation.

Both mattresses-in-a-box that are designed for side sleepers, the Helix Midnight is part of Helix’s ‘Core’ collection. The Helix Midnight Luxe is its slightly higher spec (and higher priced) sibling, and is part of the brand's mid-range 'Luxe' collection. You’ll find the Luxe featured in this year's best mattress round up as our top pick for side sleepers, but that doesn't mean the Midnight isn't a great bed. So, which one is right for you?

With the President's Day sale that's still live offering sizeable discounts, now is a great time to invest in a new mattress. So, let’s find out more about both options to help you decide if either is right for you…

Helix Midnight vs Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress: Materials & Design

  • The Midnight has five layers while the Midnight Luxe has six
  • The Midnight is 11.5” tall, the Midnight Luxe is 13.5” tall
  • Both mattresses offer the option to upgrade to a GlacioTex cooling cover and you can also add in an ErgoAlign layer to the Midnight Luxe

As you’d imagine, there are similarities between the two mattresses when it comes to design, with the Helix Midnight Luxe being the upgraded, plusher version of the Midnight.

The 11.5" Helix Midnight mattress is made up of five layers plus a stretchy, soft-touch cover. Inside the mattress you’ll find an upper layer made from Helix’s proprietary ‘Memory Plus Foam’ to relieve pressure and provide deep body contouring. This is followed by two transitional layers of high-grade polyfoam. Next up is a layer of individually wrapped pocket coils (up to 1,000 in each mattress), reinforced along the edges of the two longer sides of the mattress. At the bottom, a layer of DuraDense foam provides stability.

The 13.5" Helix Midnight Luxe starts with a breathable, hypoallergenic Tencel cover over a premium quilted pillow top that’s been sewn into the top of the mattress for a plush and soft feel. Underneath this is a layer of responsive polyfoam, followed by a layer of copper gel memory foam, both designed to contour to your body and provide support. Next up is a transition layer of memory foam, which sits on a layer of individually wrapped coils. These are reinforced around the lumbar and all edges of the mattress. Finally, there’s a DuraDense foam base layer for support.

Both mattresses offer the chance to upgrade to a GlacioTex cooling cover, a fabric that’s found in many of our best cooling mattresses because of its ability to keep temperature regulated throughout the night.

The Midnight Luxe also offers the chance to upgrade with an additional ErgoAlign layer added to the top layer of responsive polyfoam – this is ultra-dense body contouring zoned foam added to the midsection of the mattress to give even more lumbar support. Both mattresses are mattresses in a box, meaning they’ll arrive at your house compressed and rolled into a box for ease of transport.

Helix Midnight vs Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress: Comfort & Support

  • We rated the Helix Midnight at 6.5/10 in firmness (Helix suggest it’s a 5-6/10)
  • The Helix Midnight Luxe is rated 5-6/10 by the brand, we think it's a 6/10 in firmness
  • Both mattresses are primarily designed for side sleepers

The Helix Midnight is a fantastic choice for side sleepers and, in fact, until the Helix Midnight Luxe was released it was our top choice for those who preference that style of sleeping. During our Helix Midnight mattress review we rated the mattress at 6.5 out of 10 for firmness, which is slightly firmer than Helix’s rating of 5-6 out of 10.

The mattress offers plenty of cushioning support for side sleepers, with pressure points soothed around the shoulders, hips and knees. Back sleepers should also find the mattress supportive, but it’s not firm enough for heavier sleepers or those that sleep on their front. Motion isolation is also excellent, but edge support was a little lacking.

The Helix Midnight Luxe is also designed for side sleepers and we now rate it as the best mattress for side sleepers overall. It's also a medium firm mattress, is supportive enough for back sleepers and is one of our top picks in our best hybrid mattresses round up. A significant point is that it's 2" taller than the Midnight, standing at 13.5" compared to the Midnight's 11.5". Since mattresses that are between 12" and 14" in height are considered best for side sleepers, the Luxe's height is an advantage.

Part of that taller profile is the plush pillow top, which (along with the responsive foam layer below) delivers outstanding cushioning, pressure relief and contouring support for side sleepers, particularly to the shoulders, hips and knees. We also noted that the pillow top gives the bed a real luxury hotel-style feel.

However, this isn’t a soft mattress, Helix rate it at 5-6 out of 10, but our testers felt it slept on the firmer side of that, at 6 out of 10. Beneath those top cradling comfort layers, the copper-infused memory foam and coils work in tandem to keep the spine aligned, and those reinforced central coils in particular providing enhanced lumbar support.

It's this support for the lumbar region that sets it apart from the Midnight and also contributes to why we think the Midnight Luxe one of the best mattresses for back pain. While we didn't review the ErgoAlign upgrade in our full trial, one of our testers (who has mild scoliosis, experiences lower back pain and preferences sleeping on her side) slept on it for four nights and found it helped her sleep on her back without discomfort.

Motion isolation is excellent on the Midnight Luxe, too, and you’ll get better edge support than on the Midnight.

Helix Midnight vs Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress: Temperature Control

  • Both mattresses offer good temperature regulation
  • You can upgrade to a GlacioTex cooling cover with either mattress
  • The Helix Midnight Luxe has a Tencel cover to help with cooling

Both of these mattresses received a 4 out 5 score in temperature regulation during our review process. Even though the Helix Midnight contains memory foam, our testers stayed cool at night thanks to the air circulating through the coils and the breathable cover. Helix also offers the option to add a GlacioTex cooling cover if you’re a very hot sleeper.

The Midnight Luxe has a naturally cooling Tencel cover that feels cool-to-the touch. The copper-infused foam also help draw heat away from the body, along with coils, which promote airflow. Here too, you can upgrade to a GlacioTex cooling cover, but we suspect only the hottest of sleepers will need to do this.

Helix Midnight vs Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress: Which should you buy?

Buy the Helix Midnight if…

You’re on a tighter budget: Although the Midnight is still a mid-range mattress, a queen retails at $972.36 (MSRP $1,332) with our current exclusive TOMS27 code, as opposed to a queen Luxe which is $1,732.54 (MSRP $2,373.33).

You’re a combination sleeper: The Helix Midnight is well suited to those who sleep on both their sides and backs, with enough cushioning and support for both positions.

You share a bed: In fairness both the Midnight and the Midnight Luxe handle motion transfer incredibly well but if you don’t need the extra specs of the Luxe, the Midnight will isolate motion if you have a restless partner.

Buy the Helix Midnight Luxe if…

You experience back pain: The Midnight Luxe is our top pick for side sleepers with back pain, with the enhanced lumbar support helping to keep the spine aligned and pressure points soothed.

You want more cushioning: The plush, sewn-in pillow top gives the Midnight Luxe an extra layer of cushioning softness and sink-in support.

You want better edge support: The superior edge support of the Luxe means you can spread out across the whole mattress and sit comfortably on the edges.
