Avocado vs WinkBed: Which luxury hybrid mattress should you buy?

Looking for a high-quality hybrid mattress? The Avocado Green and WinkBed are mattresses from two of the top brands in the America but, as you might expect, they’re designed differently and offer different benefits to sleepers.

Here we compare both mattresses to see which might be right for you. If you’re looking for the best mattress to help your sleep, both the Avocado Green and WinkBed are great choices.

The Avocado Green offers exceptional organic credentials, while the WinkBed is customizable and offers different firmness options to suit all sleepers.

Here we’re comparing both models in terms of build, support, temperature regulation and price to help you decide which mattress is right for you and your sleeping style. Let’s get started…

Avocado Green vs WinkBed Mattress: Price & Trial

  • The Avocado Green is an organic mattress often discounted by 10%
  • WinkBeds has an evergreen $300 off discount on the WinkBed
  • Avocado offer a 365-night trial to WinkBeds’ 120.

The Avocado Green is the best organic mattress you can buy, but this means it falls into the premium price bracket. Frequent Avocado mattress sales mean you shouldn’t have to pay MSRP if you’ve got a little patience, with a 10% discount being the norm.

We have seen this drop to 5% or rise as high as 15% during major sales events. Currently, a 10% discount means you can pick up a queen size mattress for $1,799 (MSRP $1,999).

An evergreen WinkBeds mattress sale means there’s always $300 off all sizes, which takes a queen size down to $1,499 (MSRP $1,799). The WinkBed is cheaper than the Avocado, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a better choice as there are lots of other factors to take into consideration.

If you want the Plus version of the mattress, designed for heavier bodies, you’ll pay more with a queen coming in at $1,699.

Extras wise, the Avocado Green has a longer sleep trial with 365 nights to try out the mattress, whereas the WinkBed only has 120 nights. This is still plenty of time to decide if the mattress will suit you.

However, the WinkBed does have a lifetime warranty whereas the Avocado only has 25 years. Both mattresses offer free shipping to your door.

Avocado Green: from $1,399 $1,259 at Avocado
The Avocado Green is a premium organic mattress offering a supportive night’s sleep. Although not always discounted, sales are frequent enough that you shouldn’t have to pay full MSRP for the mattress. The most common discount is 10% so expect to pick up a queen size for $1,799 (MSRP $1,999). You’ll also get a 365-night trial, 25-year warranty and free shipping.

WinkBed Mattress: $1,149$849 at WinkBeds

WinkBed Mattress: from $1,149 $849 at WinkBeds
An evergreen $300 off sale means that you’ll never need to wait for a major sales event to purchase the WinkBed, with a queen always selling for $1,499. This is good value for a luxury mattress, and you’ll also get a 120-night trial, lifetime warranty and free shipping and returns.

Avocado Green vs WinkBed Mattress: Materials & Design

  • The Avocado Green is 11” tall and has two layers with a cover
  • The WinkBed is 13” tall and has slightly different layer construction depending on which firmness you choose
  • Both mattresses are hybrids, but the Avocado Green uses latex as opposed to the memory foams found in the WinkBed

The Avocado Green has a simple three layer design, starting with an organic GOTs-certified cotton and wool cover that’s designed to be breathable and moisture-wicking.

The wool is also naturally antimicrobial and protects against dust mites. Up next is a comfort layer made from Dunlop latex for support, pressure relief and breathability.

The base layer has another inch of Dunlop latex along with support coils arranged in seven ergonomic zones. These provide tailored support as needed across the body. For vegans there’s also a version of the mattress made without wool.

The WinkBed comes in one height but three firmness options (Soft, Luxury Firm and Firm). The mattress starts with a Tencel cover that’s OEKO-TEX Standard Class 1 certified (meaning it’s safe enough for children).

All the models start with a Euro-pillow top, with the soft having a three-layered pillow top for more contouring and pressure relief. The luxury firm and firm options have a two-layered pillow top.

Underneath this is gel-infused foam, and the soft version again has more of this pressure-relieving foam to stop side sleepers getting pressure build up at their hips and shoulders.

The mattresses are all finished with a layer of individually wrapped coils with reinforced edge support. There’s also a Plus version of the mattress designed specifically for heavier bodies (and costing $200 more) that skips the pillow top layer and goes straight for a layer of anti-sag foam followed by latex support with seven different support zones.

We rate this as the best mattress for heavy people that you can buy.

Avocado Green vs WinkBed Mattress: Comfort & Support

  • The Avocado Green is a medium firm mattress rated at 7/10
  • The WinkBed comes in three firmness options (soft, luxury firm, firm) as well as the Plus option for heavier sleepers
  • You can add in a pillow top or box top to the Avocado Green to make it softer, but this can almost double the cost of the mattress.

Both the Avocado Green and WinkBed feature in our best firm mattresses round up, but they are quite different in the sleepers they are suited to. In our Avocado Green mattress review our testers agreed with Avocado’s firmness rating of 7 out of 10, finding the mattress particularly suited to back and stomach sleepers (we rate it as one of the best mattresses for stomach sleepers).

The medium firm feel offers excellent back and neck support, meaning it could also be a good option for those experiencing back and joint pain. We wouldn’t recommend it to side sleepers though, who are likely to find it too firm around the shoulders and hips, meaning it could lead to pressure points building up.

Yes, there is the option to add in a pillow top or box top to make the mattress softer as required but this will almost double the cost of your mattress. As you’d expect from a firm mattress, the Avocado offers excellent motion isolation and edge support, making it a great choice for those sharing with a restless partner.

We tested the luxury firm version of the WinkBed in our WinkBed mattress review, finding it a good fit for most sleepers. It’s also one of the best mattresses for back pain, with its dedicated 3-step Back Relief System and LumbarLayer that combine to align the spine and provide extra support where needed.

The standard WinkBed also comes in soft and firm versions, which should suit side and stomach sleepers respectively. There’s also the option of the Plus version for heavier bodies, offering anti-sag foam and a zoned latex layer to provide the extra support larger people will need.

Avocado Green vs WinkBed Mattress: Temperature Control

  • Both mattresses offer good temperature regulation
  • The Avocado Green uses breathable materials and natural latex to help keep sleepers cool
  • The WinkBed has a moisture wicking cover and well-spaced coils for airflow

The Avocado Green uses naturally breathable materials that do an excellent job of keeping sleepers cool. The bed feels cool to the touch thanks to an organic cotton and wool cover that’s both breathable and moisture wicking.

Natural latex is also well known for its ability to keep sleepers cool, being another breathable material. Our testers didn’t notice any issues with overheating when sleeping on the mattress.

The WinkBed uses a breathable Tencel cover to absorb moisture and individually wrapped coils to help move air through the mattress. There’s also gel-infused foam, although there is some debate as to how effective this actually is.

As with the Avocado, the WinkBed did a good job of keeping sleepers cool but, if you’re a very hot sleeper, we would recommend investing in one of the best cooling mattress selections instead.

Avocado Green vs WinkBed Mattress: Which should you buy?

Buy the Avocado Green if…

You want an organic mattress: The Avocado Green’s eco credentials are impeccable and there’s even a vegan version available if you want to avoid the organic wool.

You’re a combination sleeper: The slightly bouncier feel of latex makes this mattress a great choice for combo sleepers who will find it easy to change position.

You want a longer trial period: You’ll get a whole year to try out the Avocado Green, giving you plenty of time to see if the mattress is right for you.

Buy the WinkBed if…

You want customization options: With a choice of firmness options, it’s easy to find a WinkBed that will suit both your sleeping style and body weight.

You sleep on your side: The soft and luxury firm options of the WinkBed will suit many side sleepers, who are likely to find the Avocado too firm.

You have a smaller budget: Yes, the WinkBed is still a premium mattress but it is cheaper than the Avocado Green, plus you don’t have to wait around for a discount to become available as it’s always reduced by $300.

What Jo doesn't know about a boxed mattress isn't worth knowing, so naturally we tasked her with producing a series of features for Tom's Guide looking at all aspects of mattresses, from how to pick between latex and memory foam (it's a tricky one), to the seven mistakes people make when buying a mattress for the first time. When testing the DreamCloud Luxury Hybrid for Tom's Guide, Jo said: "I loved the back support and pressure relief it offered. Plus, it looks far more expensive than it is."
