If you’re in the market for a luxury mattress that will also keep you cool and comfortable at night, the Avocado Green and GhostBed Luxe are two fantastic beds to consider.
But, while the GhostBed is a specialized cooling mattress, the Avocado is a luxurious organic option that keeps sleepers cool with its use of breathable natural materials. So, which is the right option for you?
Like many of our top picks in this year's best mattress guide for all sleepers, the Avocado Green is a hybrid mattress, whereas the GhostBed Luxe is all-foam. This gives both mattresses a distinctly different feel and it’s likely that one style may be more suited to you and the way you sleep. In this GhostBed Luxe vs Avocado Green comparison, we'll be assessing how each mattress performs in areas like support, comfort, pressure relief and price, using data from our expert team of mattress testers who have slept on both of these beds.
At full MSRP, the Avocado is considerably cheaper than the GhostBed but discounts of between 40-50% on the latter means prices are often far more similar. Still, it’s worth bookmarking our mattress sales page to keep up with the more infrequent Avocado sales. And, with the Memorial Day mattress sales soon approaching, we expect to see some of the best prices of the year for these beds. Ready to find out more? Let’s get started…
Avocado Green vs GhostBed Luxe: Price & Trial
- At full MSRP the Avocado Green is cheaper than the GhostBed Luxe
- GhostBed has more regular sales than Avocado
- Avocado offer a 365-night trial compared to 101 from GhostBed
At full MSRP you’ll pay less for the Avocado Green mattress, with a queen retailing at $1,999. This is still a premium mattress but frequent Avocado mattress sales mean you shouldn’t have to pay MSRP if you’ve got a little patience, with a 10% discount being the norm.
Right now, for example, a queen is on sale for $1,799/ However, we have seen this drop to 5% or rise as high as 15% during major sales events.
The GhostBed Luxe has an evergreen discount of between 40-50% off with the higher discounts generally appearing at major sales events. However, there is currently a 50% discount on the mattress, taking a queen size down to $1,498 (MSRP $2,995). This discount actually makes the GhostBed cheaper than the Avocado, despite the big difference in MSRPs.
Extras wise, the Avocado Green comes with a 365-night trial to GhostBed’s 101 nights. 101 is a little less than the industry standard of 120, and we'd expect a little more generosity here considering the price point. Both mattresses have a 25-year warranty and free shipping.
Avocado Green mattress: from $1,399 $1,259 at Avocado

GhostBed Luxe: from $2,595 $1,298 at GhostBed
The GhostBed Luxe is another premium mattress with a big price tag at full MSRP. You’ll also get a 101-night trial, 25-year warranty and free shipping.
Avocado Green vs GhostBed Luxe: Materials & Design
- The Avocado Green is 11” tall and has two layers with a cover
- The GhostBed Luxe is 13” tall and has seven layers
- The Avocado is a hybrid while the GhostBed is all-foam
The Avocado Green has a simple three layer design, starting with an organic GOTs-certified cotton and wool cover that’s designed to be breathable and moisture-wicking. However, there is a vegan, wool-free option.
The wool is also naturally antimicrobial and protects against dust mites. Up next is a comfort layer made from Dunlop latex for support, pressure relief and breathability.
Latex is known for its responsive feel, meaning the bed adapts to your movements rather than sinks like memory foam. It also has a more open structure compared to foam, which is why latex mattresses are naturally cooling.
The base layer has another inch of Dunlop latex along with support coils arranged in seven ergonomic zones. These provide tailored support as needed across the body.
The GhostBed Luxe is a slightly deeper mattress that starts with three layers that come together to form the quilted cover.
These comprise of a half inch Ghost Ice Fabric cover, an inch of gel memory foam and a half inch of cooling fibers. The cover incorporates phase change materials, which disperse body heat, keeping sleepers comfortable throughout the night.
Underneath this is a layer of patented Ghost Ice cooling material to absorb excess heat, followed by a layer of gel memory foam.
Gel foam is generally considered a better alternative to traditional foam for temperature regulation because it's less likely to trap heat. Next up is a layer of Ghost Bounce foam with the whole mattress held together with a layer of high-density base foam.
Avocado Green vs GhostBed Luxe: Comfort & Support
- The Avocado Green is a medium firm mattress rated at 7 out of 10 firmness rating
- The GhostBed Luxe is medium plush with a 6 out of 10 firmness rating
- The Avocado is best suited to back and stomach sleepers, while the GhostBed is ideal for side sleepers
The Avocado Green is the best organic mattress you can buy, offering fantastic eco credentials. But the Avocado Green is more than just an eco-friendly face – it’s also one of the best firm mattresses you can buy.
In our Avocado Green mattress review our testers agreed with Avocado’s firmness rating of 7 out of 10, finding the mattress particularly suited to back and stomach sleepers (we rate it as one of the best mattresses for stomach sleepers).
The medium firm feel offers excellent back and neck support, meaning it could also be a good option for those with back and joint pain. It’s not a great option for side sleepers though, with the mattress lacking enough contouring to soothe the pressure points around the shoulders and hips.
There is the option to add in either a pillow top or box top to make the mattress softer but adding these in a queen size (for example) will add $800 or $1,600 to your price tag respectively.
During our GhostBed Luxe mattress review, our tester found this mattress to be incredibly soft but still supportive, thanks to its supportive layers under the softer cover.
Like many of the best mattresses for side sleepers, there’s a soft give to the top cover layers that has plenty of contouring, soothing pressure points. This is backed up by firmer support from the high-density foam, which works to keep the spine aligned and supported.
However, back and stomach sleepers are unlikely to find the mattress supportive enough and could run the risk of their hips sinking too far into the bed, along with a lack of lumbar support. Both mattresses also offer excellent motion isolation and edge support, making them suitable for couples.
Avocado Green vs GhostBed Luxe: Peformance
- The Avocado’s organic materials are naturally breathable
- The GhostBed is a dedicated cooling mattress
- Both excel in motion isolation and edge support
The Avocado Green uses naturally breathable materials that do an excellent job of keeping sleepers cool. The bed feels cool to the touch thanks to an organic cotton and wool cover that’s both breathable and moisture wicking.
Natural latex is also well known for its ability to keep sleepers cool, being another breathable material. Our testers didn’t notice any issues with overheating when sleeping on the mattress. In fact, it scored an impressive 5 out of 5 for temperature regulation in our review.
It also scored highly for edge support and motion isolation. Our testing panel was thoroughly impressed with how the mattress remained supportive right up to the edges, attributing it to the fully reinforced steel perimeter all the way to the bed’s edge.
However, the GhostBed Luxe is one of the best cooling mattresses you can buy and is the superior choice for very hot sleepers. The brand’s proprietary Ghost Ice cover is cold to the touch, pulling heat from a sleeper’s body down into the quilted cover before dispersing it away from the body.
The cover also contains cooling fibers and gel memory foam for further cooling. Further down, the Ghost Ice layer features patented thermos-sensitivity technology that’s designed to sense heat when you sleep and adjust the mattress to stay cool. It might be an all-foam mattress, but it scored full marks in our temperature tests.
Similarly to the Avocado, edge support in the GhostBed impressed us. Despite being a softer mattress, when we placed a 12.5lbs dumbbell on the edge it only sank about half an inch. Our tests for motion isolation returned just as impressive results. When we dropped a weight near a wine glass at different distances and heights, the wine glass never fell over.
We think the GhostBed has the edge over the Avocado when it comes to overall performance. Both are incredibly high-quality beds, but if you're a bed sharer who overheats, the GhostBed will be a great option.

When testing the DreamCloud Luxury Hybrid for Tom's Guide, Jo said: "I loved the back support and pressure relief it offered. Plus, it looks far more expensive than it is."
