Missed that critically acclaimed blockbuster in theaters? If you're a cinephile like I am, your goal is to see every movie when it comes out in theaters. But if you're a parent like me, you know that sometimes it's just not possible to do that. Heck, I literally watch movies for my job, and even I can't catch every movie when it comes out.
That's why we're here. At Tom's Guide, our staff watches hundreds of movies each year so that we can provide you with expert opinions on many of the new movies coming to streaming services.
Below, you'll find our takes on some of the biggest theatrical releases coming to streaming this month, as well as the full calendar for August 2026.

Top movies to stream this August
'Evil Dead Burn' (PVOD)
Genre: Supernatural horror movie
What's it about? The sixth movie in the "Evil Dead" franchise, "Evil Dead Burn" centers around Alice Price (Souheila Price). Her husband dies in a car crash, so she goes to spend time with his family. Unfortunately for her, they slowly turn into possessed Deadites, and she's forced to kill several of them to survive.
Why you need to watch it: We didn't give this horror flick a formal review. But our Entertainment Editor Rory Mellon and Senior Streaming Writer Alix Blackburn both mentioned it in our roundup of the 14 biggest horror movies of 2026 so far. They didn't find it to be the scariest movie ever, but praised the movie for gore, brutal deaths and practical effects.

'You, Me and Tuscany' (Peacock)
Genre: Romantic comedy movie
What's it about? "You, Me and Tuscany" stars Halle Bailey as Anna. She's an aspiring chef who put her career on hold after the death of her mother. Her life changes when she meets Matteo (Lorenzo de Moor) and sneaks into his Italian villa. This leads her to Michael (Regé-Jean Page), Matteo's adoptive brother and the true love interest of this rom-com.
Why you need to watch it: In her review of "You, Me and Tuscany," Senior Streaming Writer Alix Blackburn praised the movie for Bailey and Page's chemistry. It's admittedly a romantic comedy loaded with clichés. But fans of the genre will find it an enjoyable watch.

'Michael' (Starz)
Genre: Biographical drama movie
What's it about? "Michael" stars Jaafar Jackson as his uncle, the titular King of Pop. The younger Jackson's film debut follows Michael Jackson through his early life as a member of the Jackson 5 in the 1960s. It continues through the Bad World Tour in the late 1980s, but notably stops before the legal scandals that plagued Jackson in the 1990s.
Why you need to watch it: We didn't end up writing a graded review for this movie, but our Entertainment Editor did post a review to the Tom's Guide Entertainment TikTok. He praised the movie's musical numbers and Jaafar Jackson's incredible performance. But, like many critics, he knocked the film for not delving deep into its subject.
Stream "Michael" on Starz starting August 7
'Minions and Monsters' (PVOD)
Genre: Animated comedy movie
What's it about? Set before the events of "Minions," this third installment in the "Despicable Me" spin-off franchise takes us back to 1920s Hollywood. After millennia of searching for big bad bosses to work for, the Minions (Pierre Coffin) discover they're perfect for the world of silent film. However, everything turns to chaos when one of the Minions, James, unleashes a group of monsters on Los Angeles, possibly bringing about the apocalypse.
Why you need to watch it: In my review of "Minions and Monsters," I knocked it slightly for lacking the depth of its Pixar counterparts like "Toy Story 5." But you probably won't care. This animated adventure is undeniably funny, and you'll spend most of the 90 minutes laughing at the hijinks these yellow creatures get into.

'Normal' (HBO Max)
Genre: Action crime thriller movie
What's it about? "Normal" stars Bob Odenkirk as Ulysses. Currently on a bit of an odyssey following a traumatic past case, he is just settling in as the new sheriff of Normal, Minnesota. The old one died suddenly, so he's been brought in temporarily to fill in until a replacement is found. But he quickly learns that the Yakuza are using the town as a bank for their ill-gotten gains, and the entire town is in on it.
Why you should watch it: "Normal" has hints of better movies like "Fargo," "Yojimbo" and "Seven Samurai." It's perfectly fine. If you have HBO Max already, there are worse movies to watch. Especially since the premise is compelling. But aside from a few incredible kills, I'd rather watch "Nobody" if I needed to see Odenkirk on a murderous rampage.

'Mother Mary' (HBO Max)
Genre: Psychological drama movie
What's it about? "Mother Mary" stars Anne Hathaway as a world-famous pop star. She visits an old friend (and seemingly old flame), Sam (Michaela Cole), to design a new dress for an upcoming show. As they work on the dress, they dive deeper into their troubled past, until things take a turn into the supernatural.
Why you should watch it: In my review of "Mother Mary," I praised it for its excellent soundtrack and production values. This movie is part "Black Swan," part "The Eras Tour." As the former, it's got some flaws, and I found the thriller elements to be lacking. But as a concert film, it's incredible, and Anne Hathaway puts on an underrated, highly physical performance.
