After England won the First Test by an innings on a flat track, Pakistan changed their tactics with regard to pitch preparation and went for a turning pitch in the Second Test and packed their side with spin bowlers. Pakistan only bowled six overs of seam in the Second Test, and two of their spinners, Sajid Khan and Noman Ali, shared all 20 wickets between them. In England’s second innings this pair were the only bowlers used.
England in the Bazball era flourish on pitches good for batting, their scoring rate pulverizing opponents, but struggle on turning pitches. Pakistan are desperately trying to create another turning surface at Rawalpindi by drying out the wicket using patio heaters, industrial fans and wind breaks.
However, pitches here have traditionally not spun much and have been batting paradises. In the past five years in test matches at Rawalpindi, seamers have bowled 56% of the overs and taken 64% of the wickets. It was here that the opening test of the series two years ago was played, when England stormed to 506-4 off 75 overs on the first day.
