There was a shock in qualifying when defending Olympic champion Jade Carey of the United States fell on one of her tumbling passes and failed to advance to the floor final. The 24-year-old later revealed that she had been feeling unwell in the days leading up to the competition. While Carey will not be able to defend her title, there is another former champion in the final.
Biles won the event in 2016 and did qualify for the final in Tokyo before pulling out due to the “twisties”. The 27-year-old looked back to her best in qualifying as she took top spot with a score of 14.600, but she will face competition from Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade, Romania’s Sabrina Voinea and fellow American Jordan Chiles.
