Joe Root scored centuries in both innings of the last test match, at Lord's, to overtake Sir Alastair Cook as England’s leading test centurion. He is now 96 runs shy of overtaking Cook as England leading test runs scorer. Root is in fine form, having scored 350 runs in his four innings in this series.

In contrast, England’s stand-in captain and number three batter Ollie Pope has scored only 30 runs in his four innings as captain. He will be keen to silence the critics who are suggesting he struggles to combine captaincy with run scoring and may not be the best choice to succeed Ben Stokes when the later eventually retires. The Surrey player will be playing on his home ground, where he has a fine first-class batting record. He averages 53 in his two tests on the ground, set against a career test average of 34.

This is the 21st test match Sri Lanka have played in England, of which they have won three, and lost 10. But one of those victories was in their only previous test match at The Oval, in 1998.

Here's how to watch every ball of the England vs Sri Lanka 3rd Test live stream from anywhere.
