Egypt came into AFCON 2023 as one of the pre-tournament favorites thanks, principally, to the presence of captain Mo Salah. Yet having squeezed a late draw from Mozambique after a late Salah penalty, the Liverpool star has since suffered a hamstring injury and the Pharaohs' on-pitch fortunes have yet to improve either, scoring an conceding in injury time last time out against Group B winners Cape Verde. Rui Vitoria's side will rely on forward Mostafa Mohamed, who scored in every group stage game, to fire the 2021 runners-up into the quarter-finals.
DR Congo had an identical group stage record – three draws, finishing second. The Leopards knew a point was enough to qualify them and knock opponents Tanzania out in their final Group F fixture, their defense holding strong in a 0-0 stalemate. Sebastien Desabre's side have conceded just twice this tournament – only four sides have shipped fewer – with former Premier League pair Chancel Mbemba and Arthur Masuaku (of Newcastle and West Ham respectively) in fine form. Brentford forward Yoane Wissa is their main goal threat.
A cagey game is expected in this one today, with Egypt as slight favorites. A potential shoot-out, perhaps?
