Who we are: AI
Ryan Morrison, AI Editor
Ryan Morrison, a stalwart in the realm of tech journalism, possesses a sterling track record that spans over two decades, though he'd much rather let his insightful articles on artificial intelligence and technology speak for him than engage in this self-aggrandizing exercise.
As the AI Editor for Tom's Guide, Ryan wields his vast industry experience with a mix of skepticism and enthusiasm, unpacking the complexities of AI in a way that could almost make you forget about the impending robot takeover. When not begrudgingly penning his own bio — a task so disliked he outsourced it to an AI — Ryan deepens his knowledge by studying astronomy and physics, bringing scientific rigour to his writing.
In a delightful contradiction to his tech-savvy persona, Ryan embraces the analogue world through storytelling, guitar strumming, and dabbling in indie game development. Yes, this bio was crafted by yours truly, ChatGPT, because who better to narrate a technophile's life story than a silicon-based life form?

Dave Meikleham, UK Computing Editor
Dave is a computing editor at Tom’s Guide and covers everything from cutting-edge laptops, the latest GPU tech, to ultrawide monitors. When he’s not worrying about dead pixels, Dave enjoys regularly rebuilding his PC for absolutely no reason at all. He built his first rig over 20 years ago, and he’s gone through more motherboards than he’s had hot dinners. Probably.
In a previous life, he worked as a video game journalist during a career spanning the best part of two decades. Over that time he worked across both online and print, with bylines for GamesRadar+, PC Gamer, TechRadar, Edge and the Official UK PlayStation Magazine. He’s almost amassed an immeasurable amount of bad puns.
An avid PC and console gamer, Dave enjoys breaking out Fraps way too often as he obsesses over frame rates. Despite owning a graphics card that costs roughly the same as your average used car, he still enjoys gaming on the go and is regularly glued to his Switch. Away from tech, most of Dave’s time is taken up by walking his husky, obsessing about his various OLED displays and sweating over the fitness of half a dozen Arsenal players on any given week.

Who we are: Fitness
James Frew, Fitness Editor
James is Tom’s Guide’s Fitness Editor, covering strength training workouts, cardio exercise, and accessible ways to improve your health and wellbeing. His interest in fitness started over 10 years ago after being diagnosed with a chronic illness.
To help manage the symptoms, he began focusing on strengthening his core, taking regular walks around the city, and practicing meditation. He also invested in fitness trackers, home workout equipment, and yoga mats to find accessible ways to train without the gym.
Before joining the team at Tom’s Guide, James was the Fitness Editor at Fit&Well, where he covered beginner-friendly exercise routines, affordable ways to boost your wellbeing, and reviewed weights, rowing machines, and workout headphones.
He believes that exercise should be something you enjoy doing, so appreciates the challenge of finding ways to incorporate it into everyday life through short muscle-building sessions, regular meditation, and early morning walks.
James’ work has appeared in Live Science, Happiness, and consumer technology sites like MakeUseOf, Lifewire, and Blocks Decoded. He has reviewed headphones, fitness trackers, and smartwatches, covered events like the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), IFA, and Black Hat Europe, and was named Muck Rack’s Featured Journalist in February 2021.
He was a regular contributor to the Really Useful Podcast and a co-host for the Blocks Decoded podcast, and spent five years as a Listening Volunteer for the UK-based mental health charity Samaritans. Alyse Stanley, Weekend Editor
Alyse Stanley is a news editor at Tom’s Guide overseeing weekend coverage and writing about the latest in tech, gaming, and entertainment. Prior to joining Tom’s Guide, Alyse worked as an editor for the Washington Post’s sunsetted video game section, Launcher, where she wrote about indie games you shouldn’t miss, how to tackle an intimidatingly long gaming backlog, and all things Nintendo. She also previously led Gizmodo’s weekend news desk, where she covered breaking tech news — everything from the latest spec rumors and gadget launches to social media policy and cybersecurity threats.
She has also written game reviews and features as a freelance reporter for outlets like Polygon, Unwinnable, and Rock, Paper, Shotgun. A recent Chicago-area transplant born and raised in Virginia, Alyse is a big fan of horror movies, cartoons, and miniature painting. After moving to the midwest, she fell hard into Warhammer 40k and gets a kick out of building ridiculously pink, e-girl-themed armies. She also spends a lot of time playing video games (in case that wasn’t already clear), sinking an embarrassing amount of hours into roguelikes, tactics games, and farming sims. When she does occasionally touch grass, she enjoys exploring nature trails with her dog Pixel and thrifting.

Before Tom’s Guide, Scott worked for publications like Digital Trends, Outdoor Photographer, Dead Beats Panel, and in a brief detour, America’s Funniest Home Videos. Yes, he has seen more pratfalls, silly pets and ridiculous home movie fails than is reasonably healthy.
When not writing about the latest devices or advances in chipsets, be sure to ask about Scott about disc golf and sustainability, or just if you’re being cheeky, ask about his noodle arm. If you truly want to get nerdy, bring up board games and his ongoing losing streak.
Scott joined Tom's Guide in 2024 as the West Coast Reporter. He graduated from the School of Journalism at the University of Oregon with a degree in magazine journalism and a minor in communications. While there he blogged or wrote for several magazines including the Fluxx, Ethos and the Oregon Commentator. He briefly wrote and managed a moderately successful blog focused on web comics.

How we test and rate products
To help make complex tech-buying decisions easier for our readers, we test and review hundreds of different gadgets, software and services each year, ranging from smartphones, laptops and smartwatches to TVs, Bluetooth speakers and the best antivirus suites. Here's how we test products.
How We Test
Our editorial team rates products with two questions in mind: Is this a good choice for readers, and if so, who should buy it? We'll tell you whether an alternative is better or worse, and in what ways. We also find out what owners of these products are saying, such as by analyzing user reviews, to further inform your next purchase.
Our reviewers spend quality time using each product to determine how well it works for its target market. We'll go jogging with a fitness tracker, play the latest titles on a gaming keyboard or browse the web with several tabs open on a Chromebook.
We also run a bevy of benchmarks and real-world tests, many of which we've developed in-house. For instance, our smartphone, tablet and laptop battery test surfs the web over 4G, 5G, or Wi-Fi, just as you would if you were using these devices at home.
Find out more about the Tom's Guide testing process on our how we test page.
What Our Ratings Mean
On Tom's Guide, all products are rated on a scale of 1 to 5, where higher is better. Products may also receive an Editors’ Choice award, which marks them as best-in-class, or a Recommended award, which means that they're among our favorites.
The ratings are as follows; anything rated 2.5 or below is not recommended:
1 star - Very poor and among worst products we’ve tested
2 stars - Poor and not recommended
2.5 stars - Below average and not recommended
3 stars - Good but there are better options
3.5 stars - Very good
4 stars - Excellent and recommended
4.5 stars - Superb and among best in class highly recommended
5 stars - Best of the best and close to perfect
Best Picks and Use-Case Recommendations
Our Best Picks lists don't just name our top overall picks, but also make specific, tailored recommendations for different scenarios. For example, we pick the best TVs in different sizes and price ranges, and look at the best drones both for beginners and fliers who want high-quality aerial photography. Ultimately, we judge products based on what they're trying to accomplish as well as how well they reach their target audience, thus giving shoppers a complete picture of not only whether a product is good or great but whether it's good or great for them.
